CHILPANCINGO, Mexico - Gunmen killed the police chief of the capital of Mexico's Guerrero state, the latest in a series of drug gang-related violent incidents.
A vehicle carrying Artemio Mejia was cut off by the gunmen, who then riddled the car with bullets, El Universal newspaper reported Thursday.
One of the gunmen was killed in the attack and two of Mejia's bodyguards were wounded.
Guerrero has been the scene of numerous drug-related attacks in recent months, prompting Mexican President Felipe Calderon to send 20,000 troops to areas plagued by violence.
