MOSCOW - The death toll of a methane gas explosion at a Russian coal mine rose to 35 Thursday.
Rescue workers discovered four more bodies at the Yubileinaya mine in the Kuznetsk Coal Basin, Itar-Tass reported. Six miners are missing, the Russian Ministry for Emergencies said.
Itar-Tass reported that 179 miners were rescued from Thursday's explosion site, including seven who were injured.
Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded that the owners of coal mines "strictly abide by the rules of industrial safety," the press service of the Kemerovo region administration reported.
