British researchers save Everest climber
by UPI

KATHMANDU, Nepal - Researchers from the University College London are being credited with saving the life of an oxygen-deprived female climber on Mount Everest.

The British research team was set up on the mountain's South Col, called a death zone because of the thin atmosphere there, in order to study oxygen deprivation, the BBC said Monday.

When climbers recently found 22-year-old Usha Bista unconscious on the mountainside, the British medical research team saved her life at their site 26,200 feet above sea level.

The head of the researcher team, Dr. Mike Grocott, said that while the emergency situation was not on his group's agenda, they acted to help the ailing climber.

"This wasn't what we intended to get involved in," he said, "but something where we were compelled to help with when the situation arose."

The BBC said after the team revived the woman and treated her condition with medicine and oxygen, she was taken down the mountain for further medical treatment.
