NAHA, Japan - Crews have begun demolishing a vacated military listening post in Naha, Japan called the "Elephant Cage."
The United States returned the 130-acre Sobe Communications Site to Japan last year, Kyodo reported.
Crews will demolish 30 high-rise towers topped with antenna that circle the site, which intercepted ship and aircraft communications.
The land will be handed over empty to property owners, the the Naha Defense Facilities Administration Bureau said, Kyodo reported.
"The government shamelessly deprived individuals of their land. But finally we've got a result," landowner and peace activist Shoichi Chibana told Kyodo.
