Report: G8 leaders have a lot to do
by ODFW

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany - The Group of Eight leaders meeting in Germany have a lot of work to do to meet the commitments made at their 2006 meeting, a report released Wednesday said.

The report from the G8 Research Group said the group has complied with 46 percent of its priority promises since its summit in St. Petersburg in July.

"In the three areas of focus at the St. Petersburg Summit -- energy security, health and education -- the G8 countries only register 69 percent, 41 percent and 33 percent compliance, respectively," said Laura Sunderland, senior researcher with the G8 Research Group. "Particularly since Germany assumed the G8 presidency in January, G8 members have increased compliance with half of their commitments."

The report's analysis is based on work done at the University of Toronto and Moscow's State University Higher School of Economics.

The G8 nations were meeting in Heiligendamm, in northern Germany.
