JERUSALEM -- The Jewish people facing a "gathering storm" of hatred unparalleled since the Nazis rose to power, former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler said Tuesday.
The "gathering storm" comes from threats posed by a genocidal Iran, Hezbollah, al-Qaida and Hamas, Cotler told a conference on the future of the Jewish people.
Jewish representatives from around the world attended the conference in Jerusalem to discuss strategies for ensuring Jewish continuity, Ynetnews.com reported.
Cotler described the current threat level to the Jewish people as being "without parallel or precedent since 1938" when the Nazis rose to power. He added, however, that in 2007 there is a Jewish state, "which provides an antidote to vulnerability" and Israel has diplomatic relations with the two emerging super powers, India and China.
"We have some powerful historical assets at our disposal," Cotler said.
