Bomb derails Russian train, 60 hurt
by UPI

MOSCOW -- Russian investigators said Tuesday a homemade bomb caused the Monday night derailment of a train bound for St. Petersburg where 60 people were injured.

The Nevsky high-speed electric train originated in Moscow and was headed for the northwestern city of St. Petersburg when the bomb blast derailed four of the 12 passenger cars about 9:45 p.m., Itar-Tass reported.

There were conflicting reports about whether any cars overturned. There was a fire, but the train crews were able to extinguish it quickly, reports said.

A Veliky Novgorod Region law enforcement official said the bomb likely contained about five pounds of TNT, the Novosti news agency reported.

Of the 60 injured, 20 were hospitalized. Many of the injuries were caused by shattered glass.

More than two hours after the blast, a special diesel train arrived at the scene to take about 170 uninjured passengers to St. Petersburg, rail officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
