MOGADISHU, Somalia - A violent conflict between armed insurgents and government troops in Somalia's capital of Mogadishu on Wednesday left five people dead.
The Shabelle Media Network reported that five people died Wednesday in Mogadishu after government troops responded to a series of grenade attacks by area insurgents by opening fire on the rebel forces.
The violence erupted in the capital's main commercial center after police shot a suspected militant.
One police officer and one militant were among those killed in the conflict, that reportedly included more than 10 explosions.
Shabelle reported that the deadly conflict comes as troops loyal to the transition government in Somalia attempt to restore order throughout the capital.
