Current helium prices are high in the USA because commercial air companies purchase helium from the USA government at a subsidized price and are shipping it overseas for a huge profit.
Helium consumption in the USA went down 5% in 2006 but retail prices soared 84%. The price charged by the USA government increased by approximately 8%.
