- MEET THE MALADY---ON WAY TO FIND REMEDY ! ( BEWARE OF AYURVEDIC FOOD SUPPLEMENTS )
Ayurveda believes that nothing is good for everybody, and everything is good for somebody. Whereas the science of Ayurveda was created by the ancient “rishis” ( sages ) for the all round health benefit of the mankind, but of late it has become an easy tool at the hands of certain greedy individuals and organizations who are playing fraud and deception against the society and are unduly making fat profits. They are making whimsical and unscientific alterations, deletions, and additions in a tailor-made style in certain ancient Ayurvedic formulations, and are selling these attractive-appearing pseudo- medicines as food supplements at exorbitant price, in colorful and glittering packagings.
Quackery in the food and health market in India has of late become more rampant and serious than in the United States or anywhere else in the world. It has been found that a large number of unsuspecting people in India are being lured by deceptive marketing to eat many of the absolutely useless, unethical, and dangerous Ayurvedic products as food supplements. The Health, Food, Drug, and Ayurveda ( AYUSH ) authorities of the country as well as Central and State Governments are deliberately doing nothing in this direction, and are merely behaving as mute spectators. Buddha Shakyamuni (~ 563 B. C. ), in his treatise, “Dharmaprada”, had said, “BELIEVE NOTHING MERELY BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD ABOUT IT. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOUR TEACHER TELLS YOU MERELY OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE TEACHER. BUT WHATSOEVER, AFTER DUE EXAMINATION AND ANALYSIS, YOU FIND TO BE KIND, CONDUCIVE TO THE GOOD, BENEFICIAL TO THE SOCIETY, AND SEEKS WELFARE OF ALL BEINGS--- THAT DOCTRINE YOU BELIEVE AND CLING TO, AND TAKE IT AS YOUR GUIDE”. In the United States a fabric of laws aimed at circumscribing the quacks and quackery has been created, and the law enforcement agencies such as, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ), have won some significant victories also. The FTC has quashed many of the highly deceptive advertisings in the American media. The FDA and Postal Service have also driven many fraudulent drugs and devices from the market-place, and have put some charlatans in jail also. THE KEFAUVER – HARRIS ACT OF 1962 requires that the manufacturer of a new drug has to prove by demonstration, first the effectiveness as well as safety of his product before it can be marketed in the United States. As a result of this law, many quack ventures in U.S. have failed to see the light of the day, or have been quickly suppressed. No Ayurvedic product, immaterial of the brand name, should go into the market until it conforms to an act similar to the Kefauver-Harris act – 1962 of United States. India’s DRUG & COSMETIC ACT – 1945 has so far proved futile and useless, and is being flouted every hour by the quack Ayurvedic companies manufacturing such bogus and dangerous food supplements like : ( 1 ) CHYAVANPRASH ; ( 2 ) SONA CHANDI CHYAVANPRASH ; AND ( 3 ) SONA CHANDI AMRITPRASH, etc. The latter two products contain gold and silver metals, which are highly toxic for the human body. Since the above named non-sensical food supplements are also being exported to the United States ( from India ), and a few U. S.-based fraudsters are also manufacturing their own similar products under the category of CHYAVANPRASH, I urge the U. S. Govt. to be vigilant, and go into the chemical and medical depths of such products, and then see whether such products deserve to be marketed there ? The Nepalese drug authorities, in the year 2003 and 2004, had seized the entire stocks of SONA CHANDI CHYAVANPRASH, and burned them to ashes in Kathmandu city, by declaring that these food supplements went against the law of Nepal.
