- SHINE OUT, FAIR SUN, TILL I HAVE BOUGHT A GLASS---THAT I MAY SEE MY SHADOW AS I PASS [William Shakespeare] : The author, Sharon Mosley, has given a good description on the quality and variety of goggle frames, but has not said anything about quality of the frame-fitted glasses—the major components of a goggle directly affecting the eyes. Some of the glasses prove soothing and healthful while some may even harm the eyes. Now Scientists have reported a possible cure for one of the world's leading causes of blindness—GLAUCOME—through an oven cleaner liquid substance commonly used to polish glass and remove grease [ source : http://www.themedguru.com/articles/now_oven_cleaner_to_cure_glaucoma-7323130.html ]. The University of Central Florida scientists have report in the latest issue of the Journal of Physical Chemistry ( Part B ) that CERIUM OXIDE nanoparticles (NANOCERIA), a common ingredient in oven cleaners, not only inhibits the enzyme, CARBONIC ANHYDRASE II ( hCA II ), but also tends to have pretty good absorption rates across the cornea. Dr. SUDIPTA SEAL lead researcher at University of Central Florida, while testing cerium oxide nanoparticles, or nanoceria, for use as a catalyst to remove grime from oven walls, realized he might have had a medical breakthrough. Since glaucoma involves an irregular accumulation of fluid inside the eye, and the existing eye-drop treatments contain only such chemicals which do not get properly attached to and transport the proteins very successfully, thus only a small amount gets through the cornea. Now SUDIPTA SEAL and his colleague SANKU MALLIK have effectively combined nanoceria with a compound that blocks the hCA II enzyme, which is involved in producing fluid inside the eye. Now two safe possibilities are in hand : No. 1 : All glasses, Sun or goggle, at the manufacturing level, be mixed with ceric oxide ( CeO2 ) or cerous hydroxide [ Ce(OH)3 ], so that when exposed to Sun light, the user possibly gets nanoparticle rays to strike the eyes, thus diminishing chances of developing glaucoma in the coming years ; No. 2 : The user makes a habit of frequently cleaning the goggles or sun glasses with the appropriate cerium compound lotion, thus leaving a thin film of useful cerium compound on the glass. Using eye drops containing cerium may be fraught with dangers, hence should not be used until the VISION CHEMICAL OF AMERICA or some other optical research body declares it safe.
