Poll: Today's Live Poll
  • How many people are aware that the bend police assisted a couple involved in child pornography to sue the parents of the child they sexually abused. Yes, these monsters can still hurt our children due to these creeps. Has anyone ever heard of assisting predators unless there is something in it for them? We need new elected, honest police and a new DA. The child molestors became millionaires in one year and the creep traveled to bangkok frequently - hmmm! court records are available for those whom want to see it...

  • No excuse for the evasion, and double "whack your pee pee point" for attempting to escape with his duaghter on the back - what sort of message does that send? BUT, Oregon's traffic laws have become draconian, in my opinion. Merhaps the poor boy just couldn't stand the idea of paying out a fortune on a Police Officers salary. http://www.leg.state.or.us/ors/home.htm 811.109 Penalties for speed violations. Don't get caught out in those wide open spaces in the triple digit zone - it *is* bad news. I think more penalty than the act warrants, personally.

  • I haven't seen Officer Church in months. Maybe he was fired? Nobody, including your newspaper has had any follow up to this case. He was charged with some very serious offenses and find it hard to believe that he wasn't prosecuted. A follow up to this story would be nice;)

  • BPD has history here. Most people dont know that Capt John Maniscalco also ran from the police but it just happened to be his own deparment so it did not get out. The good captain was drunk at the time.
  • (Posted on November 30, 2007, 9:04 am Henry)

  • He's still a cop. I've also heard that he'll be keeping his job if he pleads guilty to less offensives. Sure helps when you have a friend like Mike Dugan.

  • Does anyone know the final outcome of the Officer Church case? And is he still an active Police Officer in Bend?
  • (Posted on October 25, 2007, 1:19 pm curious1)

  • I hope he gets fired!!! If he doesn't it proves the cops have the good ol boy plan in operation. He needs to be an example for other cops. your not above the law. and to think he would put his daughter in such a dangerous situation. I'm GLAD THE COP ARRESTED HIM. NOW FIRE HIM.

  • I would be convicted of the felony for making such poor judgement as officer Church. He'll get off I believe. They firmed that up when they let him out of jail without posting bail on a felony charge. No one making these wingnut kind of decisions should be allowed to drive a publicly funded vehicle. No respect at all for this digrace to our town. Public execution is the only way to take care of this bad cop!

  • If he was really running he would not have stopped after 2 miles. At 100mph that would be 1minute and 40 seconds. It probably took that long to even notice he was being stopped. I'm sure at that speed he was concentrating on looking forward, not backwards.
  • (Posted on September 17, 2007, 9:46 am knuckledragger)

  • The term "pursuit" seems like a strech .At 81mph ,2.5 miles before he pulled over would take less then 2 mins. Seems like a speeding ticket only to me. Sounds like the state trooper is flexing his muscles
  • (Posted on September 17, 2007, 9:46 am Jim)

  • Let's not forget that Buck has served the city of Bend proudly for 12 years. I seriously doubt he would ruin a wonderful career by trying to dodge a lousy speeding ticket.
  • (Posted on August 31, 2007, 6:35 pm Bill?)

  • If Chruch was running, then why in the hell did he pull over only two miles down the road? Most Troopers I see patroling the roads, are doing so in vehicles that are NOT clearly marked.
  • (Posted on August 31, 2007, 9:01 am rickless)

  • Not as reported, the Trooper is reaching, which is why they are asking for witnesses, because he (Trooper) has doubt......wait and see how this plays out.....speeding cite for Officer Church, which is all he did wrong.
  • (Posted on August 30, 2007, 2:06 pm anon)

  • I'm sure he'll plead guilty to lesser charges & remain a cop in Bend. Had this been anyone else, they would be in jail.
  • (Posted on August 30, 2007, 11:45 am zabba1962)

  • This is not the first time a Bend Police officer has been arrested and surely not the last;)
  • (Posted on August 29, 2007, 11:03 pm NowWayJose)

  • It IS an embarrassment, not only to the police department but to Church himself - in front of his daughter, no less. I have NO idea what he was thinking, but in the two times I've met him in uniform serving in his capacity with BPD, he was certainly a polite, professional officer that I'd never suspect of doing this. A momentary lapse in judgment, with the problem snowballing in a few short minutes to felony charges? I don't know, but I'm sure he'll pay the consequences. I am happy to know that the trooper had the integrity to actually arrest him - the same as any citizen - and not let him off because he's a cop. And I'm sure that if he had been drinking that they would have tested for it if it was suspected. A sad situation for the man, his family, and the department. And a potentially deadly situation for other drivers around him, and his daughter.
  • (Posted on August 29, 2007, 5:07 pm BendMan)

  • What an embarrASSment to the BPD. I wonder if he was tested for for drugs and/or alcohol?
  • (Posted on August 29, 2007, 4:47 pm Scott Werner)

  • Officer Church, I couldn't help but laugh when I found out about your arrest. How did it feel when that trooper put his gun to your head and ordered you to the ground? You see, karma works in many different ways my friend. And its a good thing I won't ever have to deal with you again while your in a police uniform either. P.S. I ENJOYED READING THIS ARTICLE SO MUCH, I VOTED TWICE!!!!!!
