So there's a recent story (April 11) about a fatal car crash in the area, "19 year old Bend Man Dies in Crash near McKenzie Bridge," which is very sad and terrible. If any of this man's family and friends are reading this now, I offer my heartfelt condolences. This is obviously Not Good News.
At the end of the story are the standard little buttons, "Did you enjoy this story?" with radio buttons labelled 0 through 5.
Apparently this particular poll has received no votes thus far.
Well, duh. I mean, how do you answer that? "Did you enjoy reading about this poor guy who died when his car went off the road and collided with a tree?" For goodness's sake, no! No, I did not enjoy reading that! I would prefer the story not have to be written! But... um... er... it's a fine species of journalism... for what that's worth...
Anyway. Sorry if that's in poor taste. It's well-meant, I promise. It just occurred to me, is all.

Well, I think you've hit the nail on the head when you quoted "at the end of the story are the standard little buttons". They're standard little buttons that appear on ANY story. Provided as well is a 'Comments' link.
Sounds like you're looking for a more cheerful story - try this one, it'll probably elevate your mood!

Yeah, see, that's the trouble with boilerplate templates. They just aren't always appropriate... The fishing story was a lot of fun, thanks! I even "voted" on it. Every day is a mix of good and bad news, I guess.

it's good that you can give some sort of feedback to the writers, but yes - at times it's just inappropriate...
btw, LOVED the fishing story as well! |

| Things like that show the inherent problems with standard buttons, etc, being used against dynamic content. Perhaps this is a good argument for something little more politically correct or at least more generic? Surely that would have been safer. |

I tend to agree. This could be alleviated very easily. Instead of asking the reader if they "enjoyed" the story, why not ask:
"Was this story of interest to you?" And then the reader could vote.
Given the fact that many news storys can be about subjects such as traffic collisions and murders, this would probably be most appropriate. |
