This one is a garage sale with a difference. Of course, when you are the daughter of noted TV producer Aaron Spelling and the wife of Canadian Dean McDermott, the garage sale is covered with the same enthusiasm that the paparazzi accord a celebrity event.
This Friday and Saturday, Tori Spelling opened her home and hearth to shoppers, offloading items from the Los Angeles' Studio City residence she shares with her actor husband.
The sale, titled 'Tori Spelling Dazzling Studio City Estate Sale', became a spectacle of sorts after opening, when 10 helicopters belonging to television channels started covering it from above. The ground below wasn't exactly left alone, as camera crews and reporters thronged the place, even as ardent shoppers and fans made a beeline for the items.
Some of the items available for sale were used cosmetics, clothes, lingerie, jewelry, luggage, coffee mugs, cabinets, china, paintings, toys, furniture, roller-skates and others. Memorabilia from Beverly Hills 90210, a popular sitcom produced by Aaron Spelling that gave his daughter a much needed break, were also up for grabs, as were autographed photographs of the actress. According to an ad for the sale, the actress was offloading items collected over a period of 15 years.
The sale attracted as many as 300 shoppers, even as security guards made sure everyone stayed in line by sending groups of 20 at a time into the house to pick their choices. Many of the buyers had traveled from far and wide to claim their share of the items.
The success of the garage sale was probably fuelled by greater curiosity about Spelling, whose father left his daughter just US$800,000 of his fortunes, handing over a whopping US$300 million to his wife and Tori's mother Candy. Spelling and her mom can't see eye-to-eye, and the 33-year-old pregnant actress has also irked Candy with portrayal of her as a shopaholic in her reality show So NoTORIous.
According to Spelling, the sale follows the couple's decision to leave Los Angeles for a quieter life in California. “I had to break away from the past and be ready to start anew. It's out with the old, in with the new. I'm having the sale because we're moving and my taste has changed. Plus I'm a notorious pack rat. I keep everything,” Spelling had explained earlier to a leading celebrity magazine.
The sale was covered by a VH1 team for use in So NoTORIous and shoppers had to sign release forms saying they didn't have any objections to the footage being used. Also among the shoppers were some Spelling-McDermott neighbors who so far had only managed to admire the exteriors of the celebrity home from a distance.
Of course, when the items on sale are designer clothes and antique furniture, a credit card counter is inevitable. And so is a professional yard sale organizer, which in this case was Sharon Yost Estate Sales. Can't take any chances with a Hollywood yard sale, can we?
