All three counties in Central Oregon -- Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson --saw their unemployment rates increase from September to October, and each county’s rate increased more than expected. Deschutes County had the lowest rate at 4.8 percent, while Jefferson County had the highest at 6.4 percent. A heavy equipment operator excavating near the intersection of Powers Road and Blakely Road ruptured a natural gas line Wednesday afternoon, prompting an evacuation and the closure of about 1,200 feet of the roadway, officials reported. Officials report the cause of a fire in the living room of a northeast Bend home Wednesday evening has yet to be determined and estimated $65,000 in damage to the structure and contents. A Tumalo-area farm-owner who thought a fire from burning yard debris two days earlier was completely extinguished was surprised when the pile reignited on Monday morning, and an ember traveled over 60-feet to set a hay shed on fire and burn over a dozen bales of hay. Although the fire was extinguished within a few minutes, over $10,000 in damage was done to a house and vehicle in northwest Bend when improperly discarded ashes from a wood stove ignited, fire officials reported. Window-breaking vandals have been at it again, this time in northeast Bend.  Police reported that a dozen vehicles were vandalized over the weekend when their windows were shot out by a small “bb-type projectile”. On Sunday morning, police discovered three vandalized vehicles, and as the day progressed, nine more reports were received. Severe weather with wind gusts to 55-mph is possible this evening in the Central Oregon area including Bend, La Pine, Prineville, Redmond, John Day, Monument, and Dayville.
