On the heels of a visit by Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski, the 1033 citizens of the 413 homes in the Tollgate subdivision have been advised to evacuate.  They join the other 496 residents from 204 homes already evacuated from the Crossroads subdivision and Edgington Road outside the Deschutes County town of Sisters. A man was killed early Tuesday morning when his car drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic and hit a semi tractor-trailer on Highway 97 south of La Pine, closing both highway lanes for hours. Wal-Mart has been denied, again.  A city hearing officer’s decision to turn down the retail giant’s application was upheld on July 19 by the Oregon’s Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA).   The world’s largest retailer had proposed a 200,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter for the north side of Bend.
