More than 50 Cascade Middle School students challenged peers from across the country to a mathematical showdown Tuesday, said Bend-La Pine School officials. “This is a unique opportunity to get kids excited about math and to see how their math skills compare to kids living all over our country,” says Cascade Middle School instructor Pete Horsch.

Slightly more than 95 percent of Central Oregon Community College nursing program students have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
The pass rate for Central Oregon Community College (COCC) ranks seventh among 20 nursing programs in Oregon, including both associate and bachelor degree programs. The pass rate for Oregon schools as a whole is 92.5 percent, the highest in the nation.

In a joint press release issued by Chapter 92 of the Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA) and Sisters School District 6, it was announced Wednesday, November 8, that a new collective bargaining agreement has been tentatively agreed to.
According to the press release, details of the agreement will not be released until the OSEA Chapter 92 membership and the Sisters School Board have ratified the agreement.

Final Fun Ride Day & ceremony was held Thursday, November 9th
The recent rain may have kept activities inside for most people, but for the fifth-graders at Jewell Elementary School, it’s been a great time to ride bikes. Over the past two weeks, students participated in an intensive one-hour-per-day bicycle safety education program provided by Commute Options. For the ninth year the students at Saint Francis collected over $1,500 worth of pet food and supplies for the animals being cared for at the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Students of all sizes carried bags of cat litter, pet food, toys and cleaning supplies into the animal shelter and presented cash donations totaling $3,457 to the Humane Society of Central Oregon.

A new statewide survey of Oregon eighth- and 11th-graders reports disturbing data about the middle-schoolers' underage drinking -- but also some good news for parents.
The Healthy Teens survey conducted annually by the Oregon Department of Human Services found increased rates of binge drinking among eighth-graders, a larger share of eighth-graders saying alcohol is easy to obtain and significant numbers at both grade levels reporting negative consequences of underage drinking.

The Mt. Bachelor Ski for Schools event to benefit the Education Foundations for Bend-La Pine and Redmond School Districts has been tentatively set for November 17.
Mt. Bachelor has teamed up with the Education Foundations for the Bend-La Pine and Redmond School Districts to get skiers on the slopes the day prior to opening day and raise funds for area schools. In a meeting held Tuesday evening, the Bend-La Pine School Board approved two new policies involving volunteers in schools and visitors to district facilities.
