When we graduated from high school or college, most of us assumed that we wouldn't have to worry about a report card again. But anybody who carries a credit card is continuing to get graded. In fact, it's possible for computers to revise our grades many times a day. For most of us, the only report card that matters now contains our FICO score. Mortgage lenders, auto dealers, credit card companies and even landlords check ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: Why is Sprint stock doing so poorly? The stock market was way up last year and doing pretty good so far this year but Sprint stock is awful. Would you think this is a good stock to buy as a longe-term investment because it hasn't gone up like other phone stocks? I'd consider owning 400 shares if you recommended it. And what do you think of AT&T? I would like to own ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: I bought 200 shares of Enterprise Products at $19 in late 2002. I have a good profit and the dividend has almost tripled. Should I continue to hold the stock, which is now $31? My next question is about Duncan Energy which was spun-off by Enterprise last year and it's now $26 a share but doesn't pay a dividend. What do you think of this stock? Do you think it should be ... Dear Mr. Berko: I think I have a good but unusual problem. In late 2002, I wrote and told you that my wife and I sold our huge home in Durham, N.C., because our children are gone and married. We sold that home and moved into a much smaller but very comfortable new home. After buying the smaller home we had $83,000 in cash remaining. Our only stock market experience is about $101,000 in some ... [full story]

Have you tried helping your children with their homework lately? It’s amazing how much information they’re able to absorb. But some would say we’re doing our kids a disservice by not emphasizing more strongly a critical part of growing up - personal financial management skills. Four out of five high school seniors have never taken a personal financial management class, yet they’ll soon be asked to balance a checkbook, file taxes and manage credit cards ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: What do you think of Denny's Restaurants for a two- to three-year hold? And what do you think of Google for a two- or three-year hold? I only have about $1,200 to invest in two shares of Google or 200 Denny's. I only want to own just one stock, so don't suggest that I buy 100 shares of Denny's and 10 shares of Google. I want to know which of the two ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: My son recently joined Sara Lee Corp. in Downers Grove, Ill., and he is very excited about his new responsibilities. And to show his faith in his new employer he bought 150 shares of the stock. I bought 100 shares way back in 1999 at $24 and still have the stock. I'd consider buying another 100 shares but since it reduced its dividend I'm not sure if I should because I'm an ... [full story]

Recently, I was delighted by the tremendous number of e-mails that I received from readers reacting to my column. Maybe it was my confession that I once couldn't afford a can of grape juice that struck a nerve. To provide further inspiration for those who need prodding, I'm devoting this column to comments from readers, who are faithfully following the gospel of frugality. Here goes: Believe it or not, one of the highlights of our ... [full story]

I hate writing checks for automobile insurance. It always seems like money down the drain - that is, until you need it; then, insurance can be a lifesaver. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to get the best deal possible. You wouldn't buy a new television without comparison shopping, nor should you automatically reenroll in the same policy year after year - at least not without considering your other options. Here are a few ... [full story]

Tina Ormiston wishes she could have started saving money for her teenage daughter's college education years ago. But the Minerva, Ohio, woman said it was impossible. The single mother was working, paying bills and taking care of her family. Ormiston and her daughter, Tiffany, a high school senior, recently attended College Goal Sunday at Mount Union College, part of a national event allowing parents and high-school seniors to work with participating colleges on filling out ... Dear Mr. Berko: Way back in 1999 you told me that it would be in our best interest to have our account managed by U.S. Trust because they could give me and my husband the personal services we need. They managed our stock account, paid our bills, arranged our travel plans, took care of our properties when we were away, and assisted us with our bookkeeping and taxes. Now we learned that U.S. Trust is ... [full story]
