Dear Mr. Berko: I've been working at the same job for 20 years. I'm 57 and, like the other employees here, I am really unhappy with the 401(k) plan offered by the boss and managed by his poker playing/drinking buddy. It's just a fixed annuity that pays at 3.1 percent and the company doesn't contribute a penny to our plan that covers almost 63 of us. Can you give us any advice on how to ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: You hardly ever recommend tech stocks. Why? Several of us who read your column at the office would like to have about six tech recommendations to invest for our investment club. We haven't done too well with stocks we own but some suggestions from you might improve our club portfolio. We began our club in 1999 and have invested about $88,000 in the market. The club account is now worth $101,000, which ... [full story]

During much of the 1980s, I didn't have to wait until the yearly sale to buy a cute dress at Nordstrom. In my office, I was the person whom colleagues would ask for restaurant recommendations because I loved to eat out. My husband and I subscribed to Wine Spectator. Life was good. But during the Christmas holidays in 1990, I found myself following my husband to San Diego for his better job opportunity. By the ... [full story]

Nobody likes to talk about their credit card debt. If you're addicted to plastic, you certainly don't want anyone to discover your secret. But strangely enough, some bloggers don't mind divulging every detail of their supersized spending habits. The creator of www.bloggingawaydebt.com owes $22,192, and she recently had just $122 in a savings account. The young couple behind the Web site www.makelovenotdebt.com are coping with a negative net worth of $66,274. The woman who launched ... [full story]

SAN DIEGO - Wireless Facilities, a San Diego-based builder of wireless networks, said Monday that it is investigating backdated stock options, which will delay its fourth-quarter and 2006 financial statements and could hinder its credit. The company is among more than 200 U.S. companies that have launched internal probes or are under federal investigation for changing the date of a stock option, which is the right to buy company shares at a set price. Backdating, ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: What can you tell me about a bank called East West Bancorp? My cousin used to work for this bank as a loan officer. He has moved to Florida but we keep in touch and he tells me that I should buy 200 shares of this bank. Do you believe it would be a good investment for a conservative-growth Individual Retirement Account? I have 150 shares of Anheuser Bush that I bought ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: What do you think of Citigroup, which yields 3.9 percent? I am thinking of buying 50 shares because its dividend growth has been excellent while its stock performance has been poor. And I think the stock could now begin to move. Your opinion would be appreciated. I'm also looking at Home Depot that hasn't moved much in the past 4 years either. Now that Mr. Nardelli (whom you said should lose his ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: I'm a 51-year-old working mother who has, by the grace of luck and God accumulated $146,000 in my 401(k) account. I worked for a public company for the last 27 years and all of this money came from investing in the company's common stock. The plan is being closed down and I am going to move this money to my new employer's 401(k) plan. And I am really confused because there are ... [full story]

The aging of America's baby boom generation was on the minds of lenders who took part in the Mortgage Bankers Association's recent convention on commercial real estate and multifamily housing. Margaret I. Scott, director of senior housing for lending giant Freddie Mac, recalled one of the catchphrases of the 1960s, "Don't trust anybody over 30." Although they were in their youth at the time, the baby boomers began turning 60 last year. As they have ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: I found a good stock market program on satellite radio hosted by Neil Cavuto called "Cavuto on Business." During last week's program the panelists agreed that the recent market crash of more than 400 points was just an aberration caused by Alan Greenspan's speech to businessmen in Hong Kong that "a recession is near." However, Ben Bernanke, the current Federal Reserve Board chairman, believes the economy will continue to grow and that ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: My broker has recommended a half dozen high-risk issues that he feels can at least double in the coming months. And over the past 3 1/2 years his selections have given me about a 12 percent yearly return, after commissions. While I'm pleased with this record I'm beginning to get nervous with this type of investing and think it's time to start buying quality issues for the long term and reinvest the ... [full story]
