Dear Mr. Berko: What is your opinion of Google, Yahoo and America On Line? I have 25 shares of Google, which I bought at $418, and because it's now selling at $677 do you think it might be a good time to buy 25 more shares of GOOG? I'd also consider owning Yahoo and AOL if you think today's lower prices represent a good entry point? I can't find AOL in the stock guide and ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: I've got about $8,000 that I've saved up since 1991; I'd like to invest in foreign currency. I've listened to advertisements on Satellite Radio about foreign exchange trading programs that make the entire process simple by using a "green-light" system that tells the investor when to buy and a "red-light" system telling him when to sell. I'd like to invest in foreign exchange and make $1,000 to $3,000 a day, too. What ... [full story]

If you're fortunate enough to think about retiring early, you've obviously been doing some smart financial planning. But in spite of all the calculating you've done to prepare for this next phase in your life, there's one area where you might want to take a second look at the numbers - health insurance. Take the situation of a colleague of mine. With a husband at full retirement age and eligible for Medicare, she decided to ... [full story]

Just two years ago, Andrea Martin would see a designer handbag or a pricey cocktail dress in a store window and buy it without a thought. "Now you think two or three times," she said. Martin said the economy has her so nervous that she's cutting back on everything. "People are losing their homes, so it's hard to think about a Coach bag," Martin, 36, said as she shopped with her mother at an upscale ... [full story]

When most of us make resolutions for the new year, we phrase them as "things to do": "I'm going to lose 10 pounds this year," or "I'm going to join a gym (and actually go)." But I'm taking a slightly different tack with my slate of 2008 resolutions. My list includes common mistakes people make when it comes to money - and when I say "people," I definitely include myself. Let's all resolve not to ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: I bought 400 shares of Merrill Lynch at $88 last July and now its $55. What do you think of Merrill now that John Thain is taking over the company? If you are positive about Merrill do you think it would be a good idea to average down my costs and purchase 400 more shares, which would give me an average price of $71.50 My son, who has been a Merrill employee ... Dear Mr. Berko: I've decided to do my own tax return for the 2007 year both to save a few dollars and because I think my accountant's nasty personality with the IRS examiner caused me excessive grief on my 2005 return, which was recently settled and cost me an extra $3,200. Can you tell me how the new rules for medical deductions work for deducting medical and doctor expenses on my tax return? What we ... [full story]

Dear Mr. Berko: I'm concerned about our huge national debt and the Social Security trust fund. I think our debt is going to Hades in a handbasket and at my tender age of 46 I think the money in the Social Security trust fund will be gone when I'm ready to collect in 22 years. Do you remember professor Arthur Laffler who wants us to go on the gold standard, which he believes (and still ... [full story]

Homeowners desperately trying to save their dwellings from foreclosure in the subprime lending crisis say they are being led to a series of wrong turns, dead ends and blind alleys as they seek relief from lenders.   CONDO PRICES - Alex Rodriguez of Chula Vista, Calif., saw his condo payment jump from $2,000 to $2,672, well beyond what he and his family can afford. During the holidays most of us think about giving. We choose presents for our loved ones, as I discussed last week in Part I of this three-part series, and we make donations to charities and social causes that move us. But this year, as you think about giving, consider spreading the gift of knowledge to someone you care about. Make a "present" out of the wisdom you've gained dealing with money, investing and personal finance. ... [full story]

Many Northwest households plan to give or receive electronic gadgets, jewelry or gift cards this year.  But most of us don't fully understand if and how those items are covered by insurance. "So many of us are giving gift cards, or gadgets such as iPods and gaming systems.  But only a fraction of us think about contacting our insurance agents with questions on coverage," says Bob Sadler, Director of Insurance Agency Services for AAA Oregon.  ... Dear Mr. Berko: I've owned Walgreens since you recommended it at $18 in 1995 when I bought 300 shares for $5,400 plus commissions. Now I have 600 shares because it split 2-for-1 and it sells for $39 a share so I have a nice profit of about $19,000. But just a short while ago Walgreen was $49. What's wrong? My internist office tells me that they won't call prescriptions in to Walgreens and if I ... [full story]
