Congress has been talking about the mortgage crisis for months. Bills have been introduced, and a couple have passed the House. But so far, little has been done that would prevent a repeat of the mess or help homeowners who are in over their heads. Action is needed now - for homeowners who deserve it as well as for the economy generally. We laid out our prescription for a targeted and temporary economic stimulus last ... [full story]

The major candidates for president are missing an opportunity to promote nuclear energy, a sure way to meet a growing U.S. demand for power with minimal environmental impact. Candidates campaigning this month in Nevada waffled or opposed burying radioactive waste under Yucca Mountain, part of a remote stretch of desert 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Yucca and nuclear energy are keys to a comprehensive national energy strategy, and opposition to using the mountain is ... [full story]

The Federal Reserve must carefully monitor the effect of its emergency monetary moves on the value of the dollar, already weak compared with other currencies. In a hurried shift this week, the agency reduced a key lending rate to 3.5 percent - a reaction to tumbling stock prices around the world. The drop appears to have calmed markets for the moment. But long-range unintended consequences, if not monitored and attended to, could make the cure ... [full story]

Tijuana's shocking spate of killings and shootouts in heretofore-peaceful neighborhoods over recent days has a single instigating cause - the Arellano Felix Organization drug cartel. This salient fact underscores the need for Mexico's federal police and military to press an even more aggressive assault against the cartel. So long as Tijuana remains the operational base for this vicious narcotics-trafficking syndicate, there can be no enduring peace and security in San Diego's sister city across the ... [full story]

Should your cell phone company decide who can send you a text message? Should your Internet service provider block your Internet movie because it doesn't like the file-sharing service you're using? We suspect that most consumers would say no. When people sign up for a communications service, Big Brother shouldn't come with the deal. Two recent incidents, however, show that some corporations are willing to stick their noses in their customers' business. The Federal Communications ... [full story]

Eating, like sex, is both an act and an idea. It satisfies a physical need but also an emotional urge (think comfort food). That explains the furor unleashed last week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It ruled that meat and milk from cloned animals and their offspring is as safe to eat as that from conventionally bred animals. Scientific evidence suggests that's the right decision. But the immediate outcry was deafening. Food advocacy ... [full story]

To bash President Bush for exempting the Navy from two environmental laws on national security grounds is to ignore the imperative for those exemptions. The president's justifiable reasons for acting negate the impact of a misguided suit led by the environmentalist group Natural Resources Defense Council, a representative of which says the Navy kills whales with its sonar training "for the sake of convenience." And they negate unreasonable rulings by a federal judge. Her initial ... [full story]

Even though the presidential primaries started two weeks ago, you could say that the "Hispanic primary" is just now getting under way. It's about time. There are 46 million Hispanics in the United States, representing about 15 percent of the population. About 9 million Hispanics are expected to cast ballots in November, and they're considered swing voters who could help decide the election. And while there is no monolithic Hispanic bloc - Cuban-Americans often vote ... [full story]

If ever there were a situation so vividly captured by Macbeth's "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" (or very little), it is the exchange between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in their campaign for the Democratic nomination for president. Suddenly, two wars, a weakening economy, health care and climate change are pushed off the presidential stage. This started when former President Bill Clinton took a verbal jab at Obama's account of ... [full story]

A markedly slowing economy and the fear of recession are producing a flurry of economic stimulus proposals - from congressional Democrats, from Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and, in the talking stage at least, from the Bush White House. It's time for a brief discussion of some basics about what might work and what wouldn't. The starting point for any such deliberation should be recognition that we're dealing here with an annual economy of ... [full story]

The idea behind REAL ID makes perfect sense: Require all states to meet minimum security standards when they issue drivers licenses. Make it tougher for terrorists, undocumented immigrants and criminals to get state-issued identification. The bipartisan 9/11 Commission thought that was a good idea. So did Congress, which passed the REAL ID Act in 2005. However, calling for tougher standards is very different from setting them or getting 50 states to meet them, and it's ... [full story]

With the Democratic presidential field narrowing to a race between an African-American and a woman, perhaps it was inevitable that the discussion would turn to race and gender - hardly settled issues in today's America. But there is useful discussion, and then there is debate that is distinctly less so. The national conversation between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama has been less so, with the press acting as inept intervenor - for instance, focusing 24/7, ... [full story]

It's the economy, again - a sign of the times and perhaps the times to come. Michigan voters, who in 2006 went to the polls disillusioned by the war in Iraq, angry about runaway federal spending and disgusted by the performance of the Bush administration, Tuesday cast their ballots mostly with their pocketbooks in mind. The optimistic economic message former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney brought to his native state was a big reason he finished ... [full story]
