I was expecting to have to rip apart the response by Ilyce Glink in the “Ask the Real Estate Lawyer” column in your June 22nd issue. Instead, it was very well done and exactly correct. This industry needs more people like Ilyce Glink. [full story]

The city’s plan for multi-lane roundabouts on Reed Market Road should make for some interesting traffic accidents.  Nobody signals their intent to exit out of our existing single-lane roundabouts – and yes, you ARE supposed to signal your intent to leave the roundabout.  Some people get up a pretty good speed going around them, and I find myself sitting there with feet poised over both the brake and the gas at the same time, trying ... The recently passed law requiring Oregon residents to get a prescription to buy cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine is asinine.  Why must I be penalized for the actions of a few whacked-out tweakers?  Even the sheriff's office said we haven't had any meth labs in our area this year, and only one the previous year. I don't have insurance, I have to pay full price for prescriptions, and now on top of that I will have the ... [full story]

Chris Basserman’s letter to the editor (June 22 issue) complaining about trailer park residents being compensated when they’re evicted made me mad enough to respond. Basserman thinks that because he wasn’t paid when his apartment building was torn down to make way for condos, that displaced trailer park residents should be treated bad. He should have some compassion for these people. Many (like me, age 73) are elderly. Many (like me, with my SSI) have ... [full story]

As a property owner I think its ridiculous that this affordable housing battle is even an issue.  Why should people who live in trailer parks be compensated if the property owner decides to develop their own land?  It is THEIR land to do with as they choose.  I just don’t get it.  I once lived in an apartment building in Portland that was torn down to make room for condos and I wasn’t compensated, although ... My initial response to reading about the new fixed-route public transportation system  for Bend was “It’s about time.”  Upon further thought, I believe the system as planned is not adequate by any means, but certainly an improvement over the old Dial-A-Ride System. I think, and others I’ve talked with agree, that the coverage area is sadly inadequate.  It doesn’t service the entire city and doesn’t begin to address the real need of public transportation to ... As a resident of Bend for a little less than a year, I've found that more than any other place I've lived - Oregonian's love their dogs.  They're everywhere.  Downtown.  At the shopping centers.  In the parks.  In homeowner's yards.  You can't drive down Highway 97 without passing a dozen or so vehicles with someone's pet happily staring out the window.  But unfortunately they are everywhere - unleashed.  I am a dog owner, also, and I ... I know I’m probably not the only one to congratulate you on your first print issue of Bend Weekly.  I applaud you for your foray into a local weekly publication, geared towards family and community.  I appreciate the fact that I was able to share your paper with my wife and kids, without having to censor the articles or the ads.  I especially enjoyed the article on Lap Yan Chan of Chan’s Chinese.  I must ... Save Our Canals Association is a group of concerned property owners; we number about 100 property owners that live along the Swalley and the Central Oregon Irrigation Districts canals. As property owners we have come together to protect our property from being defaced and devalued by the irrigation districts ridiculous concept of piping their canals that run through our backyards. We recently were ruled against in federal court by Judge Aiken. The ruling was, yes ... [full story]

Recently, my beautiful seven year old daughter informed me of the perfect man she had uncovered for me, the only complication, it's actor and activist Viggo Mortensen.  Now, I confess to my lack of enthusiasm over this revelation for I am not a lover of movies but I am a devotee and follower of the abominable atrocities in Iraq, which led me to his t-shirt "NO BLOOD FOR OIL." As I behold the ever rising gas ... [full story]

For the everyday individual, companies like Wal-Mart have been a source of great deals, where goods can be purchased at a relatively inexpensive sum. These companies preach never-ending low costs for the benefit of the consumer. Most of us have taken that as face value, resulting in hundreds of billions of dollars of revenue annually. Wal-Mart in particular has been one of the major beneficiaries of your hard earned dollar. They promote themselves as being ... [full story]
