To the editor- The column by Debra Saunders, The Drug War Body Count, (Mon, March 16, 2009) is a necessary read. The time has come to end this drug war madness. We now have cartels operating with impunity in every major city in the U.S. When legalization is the subject it is not just the pot smokers. Three former Latin American presidents are not lightweight figures by any means. Even the Obama administration is now taking steps, ... [full story]

The story on diesel emissions [“New Report Details Diesel Danger For Commuters,” Feb. 28] regrettably neglected to mention the technological innovations the diesel industry has made over the past several years to vastly reduce emissions.Diesel has received an entire facelift. The entire clean diesel system is brand new -- from the fuel, to new clean engines, to advanced exhaust emission control devices. Commercial trucks sold this year have 90 percent fewer emissions of fine particles ... [full story]

Dear Editor, Most critical to the foreclosure crisis is foreclosure fraud.  In almost all instances of foreclosure fraud, mortgage lenders become enabled to illegally flip properties. In Louisiana, two particular mortgage companies which benefit from fraudulent foreclosures are Wells Fargo and Freddie Mac!It is highly common for a debt collector attorney to file a foreclosure: (i) in the name of a defunct mortgage company; (ii) in the name of a mortgage company which is no longer holder of the ... Oregon seems torn regarding little Gabriel Allred's placement with relatives in Mexico.  What many don't realize is that Oregon policy clearly states that according to OAR 413-010-0340 CSD "will protect a child's right to live with his extended family."  Oregon provides foster parents who operate homes that are approved by the department to provide care for children placed there by DHS.   A foster parent's role is to provide food, shelter, security and safety, guidance and ... I Hear The WordsBy Bill DahlWhen I hear the words,”Let Freedom ring!”I recall the image,Of Dr. Martin Luther KingI hear the words,”Liberty and justice for all!”Why are there exceptions,That exclude me, and make me feel so small?I hear the words,”America. America. God shed His grace on thee.”When will we “crown Thy good with brotherhood,From sea to shining sea”?I hear the words,”No child left behind.”Dad & mom can’t get real jobs or drive a car. This phrase ... My message is concerning the article published on Feb 09, 2007 titled "Katrina recovery in major need of national summit" by Marc H. Morial.  I am currently a student at San Jose State University involved in a national effort to bring attention back to the Gulf Coast.  Our group strives to create national legislation to create 100,000 jobs for residents of the Gulf Coast region.  The movement is called the Gulf Coast Civic Works Project.  We ... Chris Basserman’s letter to the editor (June 22 issue) complaining about trailer park residents being compensated when they’re evicted made me mad enough to respond. Basserman thinks that because he wasn’t paid when his apartment building was torn down to make way for condos, that displaced trailer park residents should be treated bad. He should have some compassion for these people. Many (like me, age 73) are elderly. Many (like me, with my SSI) have ... [full story]

Duke DA Mike Nifong should face criminal charges Where do you turn for help when the people assaulting your kids are the authorities themselves? When I was in high school, the local cops decided they’d had enough petty crime from some teenaged hooligans.  They started picking up the kids on the street, driving them into the woods, and beating the tar out of them.  Having kids acting like jerks is scary, but having officers of ... As a property owner I think its ridiculous that this affordable housing battle is even an issue.  Why should people who live in trailer parks be compensated if the property owner decides to develop their own land?  It is THEIR land to do with as they choose.  I just don’t get it.  I once lived in an apartment building in Portland that was torn down to make room for condos and I wasn’t compensated, although ... Dear Editor,I am truly disappointed in the City of Bend and the City Manager, specifically.  In all my years living in Bend, never have I seen such a deplorable and dangerous condition caused by the fact that the majority of roads and streets have not been plowed during the past several days.I was involved in one fender bender, and witnessed four more during a short and necessary foray through our fine city on Saturday.  I ...
