Dear Editor, Is House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna's goal (Proposed Bill Would Prohibit Use Of Medical Marijuana In Workplace, Mar. 19, 2009) to maintain a safe workplace? Then why doesn't HB3052 also target use of the many prescription drugs that are known to cause safety concerns? If citizens who use cannabis (marijuana) are too impaired to work safely that is one thing but to single out sick citizens using cannabis who are not too impaired to ... [full story]

Dear Editor, Rep. Hanna seeks to deceive when he lumps marijuana in with alcohol as a cause of workplace injuries. The fact is that 5-20% of on-the-job occupational injury involve alcohol without any other drug involved. House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna is probably working for the drug testing industry since they are the only ones who gain from universal drug tests. Employers stand to lose a bundle if Hanna succeeds because according to the Le Moyne study, ... [full story]

To the editor- The column by Debra Saunders, The Drug War Body Count, (Mon, March 16, 2009) is a necessary read. The time has come to end this drug war madness. We now have cartels operating with impunity in every major city in the U.S. When legalization is the subject it is not just the pot smokers. Three former Latin American presidents are not lightweight figures by any means. Even the Obama administration is now taking steps, ... [full story]

April is National Car Care Month, the time of year to for you to focus on taking better care of your second largest investment.  Especially now, with record high gas prices, you may not be able to control the price of gas at the pump, but you can take control of your vehicle’s unnecessary fuel consumption.  Performing simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance does not only save gas money, perhaps as much as $1,200 per year, ... Letter to the Editor: If gasoline prices hit $4 per gallon as many economists predict, an estimated 65 percent of American car owners say they will dramatically change their driving behavior, according to a survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation for our association.  According to the survey, 91 percent of drivers are driving less and 75 percent are maintaining their vehicle better because of rising gas prices.  Other specific behavioral changes were carpooling (31 percent), ... On behalf of the millions of patients who receive injections for anesthesia, pain management, and other health reasons each year, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) applauds the efforts of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Nevada State Department of Health, lawmakers, and the media to finally expose and correct the frightening infection control problem caused by contaminated syringes, needles, and medication vials that was brought into the light by the recent hepatitis C outbreak ... Dear Editor,I am truly disappointed in the City of Bend and the City Manager, specifically.  In all my years living in Bend, never have I seen such a deplorable and dangerous condition caused by the fact that the majority of roads and streets have not been plowed during the past several days.I was involved in one fender bender, and witnessed four more during a short and necessary foray through our fine city on Saturday.  I ... Dear Editor, Most critical to the foreclosure crisis is foreclosure fraud.  In almost all instances of foreclosure fraud, mortgage lenders become enabled to illegally flip properties. In Louisiana, two particular mortgage companies which benefit from fraudulent foreclosures are Wells Fargo and Freddie Mac!It is highly common for a debt collector attorney to file a foreclosure: (i) in the name of a defunct mortgage company; (ii) in the name of a mortgage company which is no longer holder of the ... Oregon seems torn regarding little Gabriel Allred's placement with relatives in Mexico.  What many don't realize is that Oregon policy clearly states that according to OAR 413-010-0340 CSD "will protect a child's right to live with his extended family."  Oregon provides foster parents who operate homes that are approved by the department to provide care for children placed there by DHS.   A foster parent's role is to provide food, shelter, security and safety, guidance and ... Dear Editor: Millions of car owners trust independent repair shops to provide affordable and competitive automotive repair service.  Unfortunately, the ability of motorists to choose where to get their vehicle repaired could be seriously challenged in the future.  Vehicles engine, safety and entertainment systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with virtually every vehicle system either monitored or controlled by computers.  Servicing these vehicles will require that independent shops have full access to the same information and ...
