If a bass could build its ideal habitat, the specs would be something like this: shallow water, in or near heavy cover with quick access to deep water nearby. While the nearby deep-water access is good news for anglers (you need some place to float your boat), pulling bass out of water in or near heavy cover can pose some access problems.   Larry Nixon is a former Bassmaster Classic champion with more than $2 million in ... CHICAGO - Sammy Sosa was back in town, and it was a happy day in column-writing land - especially with him saying ridiculous things like, "I've always been humble," and guaranteeing he would be great again. He was such an inviting target, I almost felt guilty. Almost. The column was coming together nicely, too. The former Cubs superstar-turned-pariah practically fell while fanning on a low pitch in his first at-bat against the White Sox on ... [full story]

Diego Maradona was admitted to a Buenos Aires clinic on March 28 and he stayed there for 13 days, receiving around-the-clock treatment for what doctors described as acute hepatitis brought on by too much alcohol, too much eating, too much smoking. Too much Maradona. He was discharged a week ago or, more accurately, he discharged himself. His personal physician begged him to stay for more testing, and the private clinic made him sign documents, "for ... [full story]

The vocal stylings of the little, unassuming Pacific chorus frog appears uncredited in a supporting role in many old Hollywood films. The males' familiar kreck-ek call adds an air of authentic outdoor charm to what otherwise is usually make-believe.That is, of course, unless the movie is set outside the frog's natural range. He is neither migrant nor much of a traveler, and he tends to stick to the sides of low shrubs and grasses with ... [full story]

It seems that players are always looking to get more distance off the tee.  If this sounds like you, the first thing you are going to want to check is your stance.  Many of my students set up to their driver with a stance that is way too narrow and can’t understand why they don’t hit their driver very far.  But if they over-correct and widen their stance too much, they run the risk of inhibiting their backswing ... John Force Racing intends to be back at the track this weekend, pending the results of an unprecedented test by the boss himself to see if changes made to the team's cars allow them to be both raceable and safe. Force is funding studies not only of what caused Funny Car driver Eric Medlen's fatal accident but what steps can be taken to prevent a repeat occurrence. He has either conferred with or actually retained ... [full story]

The antidote for Barry Bonds is Rick Sutcliffe. The trouble is that Sutcliffe is retired. No pitcher has faced Bonds more often without yielding a home run. No man has tempted fate so frequently and so favorably. In 51 career plate appearances against Sutcliffe, Bonds produced two measly RBI and struck out nine times. Granted, all of these confrontations preceded Bonds' midcareer metamorphosis, his physical transformation from a sleek athlete to a bulging biology experiment. ... [full story]

For the CliffsNotes version of why NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell came down so hard on Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones and Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry Tuesday, listen to the dialogue that took place among the 62 player representatives last month at the NFL Players Association meeting in Hawaii. "We wanted to clean up our image a little bit," said former San Diego Chargers receiver Keenan McCardell, who attended the four-day event. "It was ... [full story]

LaMarcus Aldridge, in his rookie season with the Portland Trailblazers, will miss the remainder of the season following his recent diagnosis of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. A statement on the team web site said 21-year old Aldridge underwent testing on April 9 at Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Portland, and was treated successfully for the condition by Dr. Daniel Oseran. According to WebMD, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome involves an abnormal electrical connection (or bypass tract) between the atria ... [full story]

SAN DIEGO - The former landlord for Reggie Bush's parents in Spring Valley has reached an undisclosed settlement agreement with the Bush family for alleged unpaid rent and other losses in a case still under investigation by the NCAA. Michael Michaels alleged last year that Bush's parents lived rent-free in his house for a year while Bush was at USC, with the understanding that Bush would be a centerpiece in Michaels' fledgling marketing agency after ... MILWAUKEE - I'm not a Cubs fan, I simply like good baseball. And what all of us saw from the Derrek Lee-less losers last season wasn't even good baseball's third cousin twice removed. So, yes, for the sake of disaster-avoidance in Cubbieland, it's nice to see big No. 25 back at first base. I mean, how 'bout that difference-making double play in Saturday's 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers? Fourth inning. Cubs up 2-1. J.J. ... [full story]

CLEVELAND - Beer, brats and baseball - it sure beats blizzards. Major League Baseball took "road trip" to a new level Monday evening when the Indians boarded a flight to Milwaukee ... for Cleveland's official home opener ... against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. We're not making this up. And, hey, the "Cleveland Indians of Milwaukee" does have a nice ring. More than 8 inches of snow sat atop the Jacobs Field outfield Monday ... [full story]

BEREA, Ohio - Much is made of the Browns' negligence in drafting offensive lineman. Fair enough. The team has invested two first-day picks in eight drafts, a pair of centers - Melvin Fowler, Jeff Faine - now playing elsewhere. The expansion-era grade for importing young blockers is a solid "F." Seldom scrutinized is the team's defensive line drafting, which, if not more derelict than on the other side of the trenches, has arguably yielded even ... [full story]
