Prominent tattoos? Check. Nose ring? Check. Diamond-studded front tooth? Check. Platinum blond hair? Check. Attitude to spare? Double-check. Were an observer to judge Pink solely by her appearance, they might assume she's just another dance-rock automaton with a big image, big mouth and precious little to say. But this Philadelphia-born singer, songwriter and vocal powerhouse is anything but another empty-headed pop tart, a la Paris, Jessica and Lindsay.   POWER OF PINK - Pink has had ... [full story]

"Portrait: The Life of Thomas Eakins" by William S. McFeely; Norton; 256 pages; $26.95. The greatest 19th century American poet, Walt Whitman, thought Thomas Eakins was the best American painter of his time - a force as much as an artist, he declared. But this was a minority opinion in their day. When Eakins died in 1916, most of his paintings were stacked against the walls of his home on Philadelphia's Mount Vernon Street. His ... [full story]

"Dirt" - inspired by Courteney Cox's personal war with paparazzi during the "Friends" years when she became rich and famous - focuses on Lucy Spiller, a take-no-prisoners editor of tabloid magazines who plays and works hard. A glamorous character equally at ease at glitzy Hollywood cocktail parties as in sterile corporate boardrooms, Spiller usually doesn't shed her sexy red satin dress until diving into bed with her current boy toy. Lots of skin flashes across ... [full story]

I think we all know by now that the participation of movie blogigencia on the Internet did not turn "Snakes on a Plane" (New Line, 2 1/2 stars) into the greatest horror movie of all time, nor the campiest. Just the same, it's a pretty entertaining thrill ride for a rainy winter night. (OK, a snowy night if you've got it.) Actually, all that online participation in the creation of this movie proved to be ... [full story]

At first blink, (plus44) seems to be jinxed. At second blink, well, ditto. On Sept. 9, drummer Travis Barker broke his right arm while filming a video for "When Your Heart Stops Beating," the infectious title track from (plus44)'s debut album. His injury, which was exacerbated by a subsequent European tour that took place before his broken limb was diagnosed, led to the postponement of the four-man band's debut U.S. tour. It was scheduled to ... [full story]

Fractals are like metaphysical Legos, building blocks that connect the worlds of number and shape. But unlike the plastic toy bricks, you can't see fractals, which are essentially algorithms or mathematical rules. Instead, you see the patterns they produce, which are fundamentally distinctive, to say the least. All fractal patterns share a few common traits.   FRACTAL ART - “Warm Glow” is the product of a Mandelbrot set, perhaps the most famous fractal. Coloration is based upon how ... [full story]

Let's just say that Dierks Bentley has had a good past few months. His fourth CD, "Long Trip Alone," was released and debuted in the top spot on Billboard's country albums chart. Its first single, "Every Mile a Memory," is a major country hit. Bentley performed the song on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and "Today," and did the same at the 2006 Country Music Awards, where he was a nominee for male vocalist of ... [full story]

"How Language Works: How Babies Babble, Words Change Meaning, and Languages Live or Die" by David Crystal; Overlook; 500 pages; $32.50. In a scene in Italo Svevo's antic novel "Confessions of Zeno" (1923) the hopelessly hypochondriacal narrator hears a friend describe the musculature of the leg. He thereupon begins to obsess on the muscles of his own legs, causing him to limp - and he limps for the rest of his life. I sometimes wonder ... [full story]
