With her more frequent shuttle missions to the Middle East, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is signaling the Bush administration's determination to pull out all the stops to achieve a major breakthrough in efforts to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But the odds for success of her planned peace conference this fall in Annapolis, Md., are virtually nil. In her impatient quest for a peacemaking legacy, Rice is ignoring critical realities on the ground that require ... [full story]

Dear senators and members of Congress: I recently visited NASDAQ on behalf of NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott to help raise money for his "All Stars Helping Kids" program, and while I was there I had the opportunity to say in my luncheon remarks on Wall Street that I've long believed that where capital investment and trade are crossing borders, armies don't. In an increasingly flat world, to draw on Thomas Friedman's very apt ... [full story]

When displaced American workers complain about outsourcing U.S. manufacturing jobs to take advantage of cheap Chinese factory labor, and about using low-paid Asians here on H-1B visas to take engineering and computer jobs, the globalists and multinational corporations have a ready answer. They recite in chorus: Don't worry, be happy, because American technology and innovation enable us to compete in the global market. But now those same globalists and multinationals are trying to outsource our ... [full story]

A case now before the U.S. Supreme Court proves why the Senate must defeat the United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty. The oral arguments heard this month by the justices didn't mention the treaty, but the parallels are powerful. The case concerns Jose Medellin, a Mexican national on death row in Texas. Medellin was convicted and sentenced to death after he confessed in 1993 to the rape and murder of two teenage girls in ... [full story]

The agony that San Diegans endured in recent days is too fresh in the mind to think seriously about how these fires will be remembered. But overlooking the firestorm bombings that terminated World War II, I doubt that any previous conflagration has seen more than a half-million people vacate their homes. Multiple accounts of individual suffering, together with incredible acts of kindness - e.g., tales of refugee centers where volunteer caregivers almost equaled the number ... [full story]

In mid-September, the hired guards for American diplomatic personnel in Baghdad - Blackwater USA, the guards call themselves - engaged "suspected troublemakers" in a firefight that cost the lives of 11 to 17 Iraqi civilians. (The exact number depends on the varying reliability of eyewitnesses.) Descriptions of what happened that day (Sept. 16) vary only slightly. The driver of one of four Blackwater Suburbans mistook an oncoming civilian vehicle as a possible attacker. Machine-gun fire ... [full story]

America's global struggle against international drug smuggling rates hardly a mention by the presidential candidates of both major political parties. Given that these narco-traffickers flood America's streets with an estimated $23 billion a year in destructive drugs, that's a deeply worrying omission. National security is a top priority when it comes to countering international terrorism. Where's the recognition that billions of dollars in illicit narcotics that ravage the lives of 7 million seriously addicted Americans, ... [full story]

The American people rose up out of their usual apathy and soundly defeated the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 that would have given amnesty to illegal immigrants. Now, some senators are trying to get Congress to pass a backdoor amnesty by calling it the DREAM Act, and it's really a nightmare for Americans. The cutesy title DREAM, which is meant to be a double-entendre, is an acronym for Development, Relief and Education for Alien ... [full story]

Abu Ghraib, alleged Gitmo abuses and the bloody mess in Iraq have supposedly tarnished America's standing on human rights and democracy. That's a crabbed view of history even if these critiques were valid, which mostly they are not. Clearly, President Bush doesn't buy the blame-America arguments. He used the global stage of his speech to the United Nations General Assembly to preach the cause of democracy and sharply condemn the world's worst human rights violators. ... [full story]

Those who seek to understand what's behind the chatter about President George W. Bush's Security and Prosperity Partnership as a possible prelude to a North American Union, similar to the European Union, should read the 35-page White Paper published recently by the Hudson Institute called "Negotiating North America: The Security and Prosperity Partnership." The Washington, D.C., think tank is blunt and detailed in describing where the Security and Prosperity Partnership is heading. Here's how Hudson ... [full story]

The bad news is that Shakespeare has disappeared from required courses in English departments at more than three-fourths of the top 25 U.S. universities, but the good news is that only 1.6 percent of America's 19 million undergraduates major in English, according to Department of Education figures. When I visit college campuses, students for years have been telling me that the English departments are the most radicalized of all departments, more so than sociology, psychology, ... [full story]

Despite the progress that Gen. David Petraeus outlined in his much-awaited report on the surge, critics claim little has been accomplished in the four years since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Democratic leaders who have already declared the war lost continue to criticize Iraq's ruling coalition for a lack of political progress. They also cite impatience of the American public as the primary justification for unilateral withdrawal of all efforts to stabilize and secure ... [full story]

I sealed my doors, boarded the windows and hugged my children in anticipation of the big storm. We waited and waited. After a few hours, we went outside and beheld a bright blue San Diego sky. What happened to the storm the newspapers and television were forecasting? I canceled trips, didn't go to a Padres game and called my friends, warning them to take the appropriate precautions. To tell the truth, I ended up feeling ... [full story]
