On Friday night my wife suggested we go to a movie, "Music and Lyrics." The suggestion came with a warning: the characters repeatedly burst into song. I like songs well enough, but I hate it when characters burst into them. I'm not a fan of musicals. I don't want the story interrupted by people singing and dancing. I remember my disappointment with "West Side Story." As a kid I thought I was going to see ... [full story]

Bestselling Christian author of apocalyptic novels/political potboilers and close friend to Israeli officials sets his sights on Iran In a recent blog post datelined Jerusalem, Joel Rosenberg wrote: "The buzz here in the last few days is that Israel is seriously considering a preemptive strike against Iran's nuclear facilities and ballistic missile sites." Given Israel's less than sterling performance against Hezbollah this past summer, Rosenberg wasn't convinced that Israel "has the capacity -- or the ... [full story]

With mounting bipartisan criticism from Republican congressmen and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the Department of Justice has stepped up an unprecedented public relations campaign to defend its prosecution of former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, now serving 11- and 12-year prison terms. But new facts keep emerging to prove that this prosecution was a gross injustice. CNN judicial expert Jeffrey Toobin described it as "one of the most unusual prosecutions I've ever ... [full story]

Democrats have struggled for a generation to escape the crippling public perception that they are soft on national security. Majority Democrats in the House of Representatives have now revived their party's electoral curse. The House vote Friday for a Democratic leadership resolution opposing President Bush's plan to reinforce U.S. troops in Iraq was lopsidedly partisan. Nearly all Democrats voted for it. All but a relative handful of Republicans voted against it. Yes, it is a ... [full story]

Valentine's Day can be confusing. We're getting mixed messages through the media. Just last week a study determined that women don't really just wanna' have fun. They wanna' have clothes. At least more so than intimacy. Reported in a Reuters story, the survey by a drinks' company found that, on average, women would give up "making whoopee" for 15 months in exchange for a closet full of new clothes. So, I guess I could punt ... [full story]

This year's Black History Month arrives just as black lawmakers are expected to have their greatest influence to date within the hallowed halls of the U.S. Congress. Not only did Americans last November vote for a sea change in Washington, D.C., they also paved the way for one of the most diverse House chambers in history, as well as House leaderships. Two of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., ... [full story]

Debt, lawsuits, president-elect's resignation threaten Pat Robertson's former juggernaut On September 19, 2005, Jason Christy, the head of Christy Media and the publisher and editor-in-chief of The Church Report, a national news and business journal for pastors and Christian leaders, was named executive director of the Christian Coalition by the organization's president, Roberta Combs. "I am honored and humbled to be chosen by the Christian Coalition's Board of Directors for this key position," Christy said. ... [full story]

To those expressing surprise if not horror that the Bush administration is proposing to increase defense spending in wartime (imagine that!), herewith a bit of perspective. The baseline 2008 Department of Defense budget of $481.4 billion plus an added $141.7 billion for combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan still leave military spending as a share of the national economy below even peacetime rates for most of the last half century. That's right, below the post-Korean ... [full story]

No doubt about it. The most frequently voiced goal of kids growing up in the last 50 years has been to become an astronaut. Little boys - and, more lately, little girls, too - have aspired to push their career envelope toward outer space. But suddenly, they might wonder. A life that had seemed to combine constant excitement with the personal attributes of Eagle Scouts or holy orders has forfeited its trappings of virtue. NASA's ... [full story]

Most polls rate the press and the Congress at a low ebb in public respect. That represents a strange phenomenon where reporters, particularly broadcasters, are treated as celebrities, as are members of Congress, and yet they are the subject of strong, often bitter, criticism. During my career, I have been both a reporter and a White House communicator, first asking questions and then answering them. And I have learned that the question-and-answer process forms many ... The sweetest Valentine Republicans in the U.S. Senate could give to American women would be to announce that they will filibuster until Christmas if Senate Democrats try to ratify the offensive United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, and repeatedly promoted by President Bill Clinton and U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., it has wisely never been ratified. The notion is downright ... [full story]

We Midwesterners love, love, love to talk about the weather. How many times this week have you heard "Cold enough for ya?"? Hell hasn't frozen over - it just feels like it. We love to talk about weather so much that our local TV weather forecasters are celebrities. People could pick out Dick Goddard in a whiteout, but they wouldn't know their city councilman if he walked up and bit them. Want to strike up ... [full story]

What do the Fall Creek Baptist Church in Indianapolis and GoDaddy.com have in common? They both drew a flag from promoters of the Super Bowl, but with markedly different penalties. The National Football League slapped the church with a legal warning not to feature the Super Bowl on a large screen at a church-sponsored party. Reason? The pastor was asking for a small fee to cover refreshments, and was using the NFL’s logo to promote ... [full story]
