It takes nearly 7 million trucks and 20,000 locomotives to transport more than 9 billion tons of goods throughout the U.S. each year. Trucks carry about 66 percent of all freight shipped in the U.S., with rail transport shipping about 16 percent, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While the ground freight transport system is invaluable to businesses, the economy and consumers, it is not without costs. Moving freight accounts for 20 percent of ... [full story]

The calendar has turned the page and the racing world is beginning to stir from its short hiatus. Preseason racing magazines are popping up on the newstands and Daytona testing is only days away. Some drivers have not been sitting idly by as they wait for the 2007 to begin. Greg Biffle became engaged to longtime girlfriend Nicole Lunders. Former Busch Series driver Burney Lamar married model Niki Taylor two days after Christmas. Lamar drove ... [full story]

Forget four doors and family function -- Volvo is building a bad boy. Its new C30 three-door hatchback that goes on sale in the United States next summer will fill a couple of holes in the lineup and put Volvo in the hot-hatch, high-fashion segment.   VOLVO C30 -- Volvo’s new three-door hatchback C30 goes on sale this summer and is supposed to put Volvo in the hot-hatch, high-fashion segment. Only a few years ago, the trend in NASCAR was to hire young, inexperienced drivers for Nextel Cup teams. Now, that trend has been reversed. Two vacancies on the Cup circuit are being filled by veterans who have even been out of the sport for a year or longer. Sometime soon, Robert Yates is expected to announce 50-year-old Ricky Rudd as the driver for the high-profile 88 car (which may change its number to 28) ... [full story]

Some girl in second grade sharing really ticked me off when she called my Tonka truck a "tinkle toy." I sputtered for a snappy comeback but was too stunned by her hatchet to my heart. That was just a mean-spirited thing to say. It was jealousy, I decided, because I wouldn't let her hold the truck. It was a red Ford pickup, early '60s fleet-style body and white cab. I can still see its chrome grille and ... [full story]

More Americans will travel this Christmas-New Year's holiday than ever before. AAA estimates that 64.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holidays, a 2.2 percent increase from last year's 63.5 million travelers. "Because hotel rates and air fares have risen only slightly from this time last year, Americans will not hold back when making travel arrangements this holiday season," said AAA Oregon Senior Vice President Beth Van Horn. "This ... [full story]

I used to think that when I lost the thrill of shifting gears, it'd be time to throw dirt on the pine box. But a week of testing the VW GTI with direct-shift gearbox has me planning another exit. Volkswagen calls its DSG an automatic, but that's misleading. It's more of an automated manual transmission. Or is it a semiautomatic?   VOLKSWAGEN SHIFTS - Volkswagen’s new direct-shift gearbox, called DSG, is more like an automated manual transmission. The DSG ... [full story]

Severe winter weather can make driving a challenge for even the most experienced drivers. Extreme cold temperatures make vehicles more likely to breakdown if proper maintenance has not been performed, and heavy snow falls and icy road conditions can cause vehicles to slide off the road and become stuck in the snow. This winter, AAA expects more than 100,000 stranded motorists to call for roadside assistance for vehicle extrication services. "Performing proper vehicle maintenance and good trip ... [full story]

General Motors builds so many variants of its full-size SUVs that the differences end up being six of one, a half-dozen of the other between those at GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac. They're all pretty good truck-based SUVs, so it's more of a styling choice, whether Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban or the GMC Yukons.   2007 CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV - The Cadillac Escalades stand out from the SUV pack due to their different exterior body panels, more soundproofing, leather and ... As the dark clouds and shorter daylight hours of winter settle in, the safety features and all-wheel drive of the Mercury Montego sedan are as comforting as a bowl of hot soup. This Mercury twin to the Ford Five Hundred is endowed with refining features, and it is an award-winner among its owners.   MERCURY MONTEGO - The new Mercury Montego recently received AutoPacific's 2006 Ideal Vehicle Award, which recognizes the passenger vehicle that most closely meets customer ... The 2007 Lotus Elise will have a starting price of $44,915. The supercharged Exige S has a base MSRP of $57,825. Slight price increases are due to changes of the exchange rate between the British pound and U.S. dollar as well as the addition of upgraded headlights to comply with U.S. regulations. Both cars use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with variable-RPM cam switching and a close-ratio six-speed aluminum gear box. Supercharging pushes the 190 horsepower to 220 ... [full story]

As a responsible member of the motoring media, I'm having some guilt for liking the new, large sport utility vehicles from General Motors. I've just finished a week in a GMC Yukon and if you need one of these things, the 2007 model is a desirable improvement over the 2006.   GMC YUKON - The GMC Yukon is not just a dressed-up truck. The SUV is a fine cruising machine, even when costing more than $50,000. ... [full story]

We're all doing more with less, and so is Ford's 2007 Sport Trac, built from a stretched Explorer SUV. This downsized but upscale "pickup" is a practical choice for users who haul or tow the weekend toys, but also need a carlike driver for work and the school car pool.   2007 FORD SPORT TRAC - The new Sport Trac is a practical choice for users who tow the weekend toys, but also need a car ...
