The 2008 season for the Central District of the Oregon High School Equestrian Teams has begun!  There are approximately 140 riders braving the cold weather to practice their patterns and get their horses back into shape to compete in three district meets this coming spring! Eric King, Bend’s Interim City Manager, this week announced the appointment of Sandi Baxter as the interim Police Chief for the Bend Police Department. Baxter will begin working intermittently in January to begin the transition of Police Chief Andy Jordan vacating his position on March 31. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has awarded $124,724 to the City of Bend’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) infrastructure project. The City’s application was one of eight proposals approved to receive SRTS infrastructure funding in 2008-2011, and although the SRTS is 100% Federal funding with no match funding required, Bend has approved $50,000 in its 07/08 budget as supplemental and matching funds for the SRTS project. Deschutes County dog owners now have the option of donating to local spay and neuter programs when they purchase or renew their dog licenses.  A new voluntary donation program initiated by the County aims to raise funds for area spay and neuter programs, and the money donated will benefit spay and neuter programs in the form of County grants. The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners has selected 13 residents to serve on the South County Groundwater Advisory Committee. Deschutes County has identified about $35 million to apply towards drinking water protection in the south county. Central Electric Cooperative (CEC) President, Dave Markham, announced this week that CEC will retire a total of $661,563 in capital credits.  Checks will be mailed this week to current and former members eligible to receive capital credits payments.
