On December 7, the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Oregon Parks and Recreation (OPRD) and the Des Chutes Historical Center (DHC) will dedicate two new memorials in honor of Colonel Rex T. The Central Oregon Reserve Law Enforcement Officer Academy held commencement exercises for the class of 2006 in Redmond High School auditorium last Saturday, with 15 graduating. The graduates represent five Central Oregon Law Enforcement agencies including the Sheriff’s Offices of Deschutes and Jefferson Counties, and the Police Departments of Bend, Prineville, and Redmond. Governor Ted Kulongoski has proclaimed two significant times in November to recognize Oregon veterans. “Veterans Awareness Week” and “Hire A Veteran Month” have been designated to honor veterans and to encourage all employers to hire Oregon’s military veterans. Deschutes County’s vegetation program is one of 20 recipients of matching grants to fund programs designed to fight the spread of noxious weeds. The grants, totaling about $200,000, were awarded by BASF Professional Vegetation Management. The County’s vegetation manager, Dan Sherwin, applied for approximately $21,000 representing the Central Oregon Weed Management Area group to better combat Yellow Flag Iris. Money raised through gift certificate sales will be used to support Rainbow Clubhouse program services, and can also be purchased by cash or check to benefit the local homeless shelter, Bethlehem Inn.
