CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University professors Kathleen Dean Moore and Kurt Peters, former OSU student Amber Lacy, along with a colleague at the University of New Mexico, have edited a book that pays tribute to the life of pioneering educator Viola Cordova – the first Native American woman to receive a Ph.D. in philosophy. Governor Ted Kulongoski has proclaimed two significant times in November to recognize Oregon veterans. “Veterans Awareness Week” and “Hire A Veteran Month” have been designated to honor veterans and to encourage all employers to hire Oregon’s military veterans. The Bend Parade of Flags (BPF) program which was developed by a local group of patriotic citizens will display hundreds of American flags in downtown Bend on November 11, Veterans Day, to honor our nation.  160 flags will be erected by the Central Oregon Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (COMOAA), and Boy Scouts of America Troop 25. Deschutes County’s vegetation program is one of 20 recipients of matching grants to fund programs designed to fight the spread of noxious weeds. The grants, totaling about $200,000, were awarded by BASF Professional Vegetation Management. The County’s vegetation manager, Dan Sherwin, applied for approximately $21,000 representing the Central Oregon Weed Management Area group to better combat Yellow Flag Iris. Thousands of Oregonians who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or have a speech impairment are about to have an easier time communicating with the Oregon Department of Human Services Office of Vocational Rehabilitation Services thanks to a new software system the agency is installing. Deschutes County Mental Health Department’s Rainbow Clubhouse program is now selling gift certificates for holiday presents. Money raised through gift certificate sales will be used to support Rainbow Clubhouse program services, and can also be purchased by cash or check to benefit the local homeless shelter, Bethlehem Inn.
