For collectors of "advertiques," there are certain seminal characters, most of which have appeared in print ads, on television, and in three dimensional form. Among the favorites are the Jolly Green Giant, Charlie the Tuna, Tony the Tiger, the Pillsbury Doughboy, the Energizer Bunny, Mr. Clean, Reddy Killowatt - and Speedy Alka Seltzer. Speedy is a spunky redheaded boy with a dazzling white grin and almost Howdy Doody-like ears. His body is a round Alka ... [full story]

Q: We are adding a sun porch that will open to a deck through three walls of French doors. My husband wants to put a slate floor in the new room, but I am trying to hold out for wood. Some recent books of particular interest: "The Cat in Art" by Stefano Zuffi (Abrams, $35). From the title, you might expect this to be some kitschy kitten book. Au contraire. It's a charming but substantive treatment of the subject, ranging from ancient Egyptian bronzes to a Tom Wesselman pop painting, and Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Lucian Freud portraits. Arranged in roughly chronological order, it contains chapters on Antiquity-Egyptian goddesses to the mosaics of Pompeii; ... [full story]

Q: When the cicadas arrived in June, the two sugar maples in my front yard were inundated with them. Once they were gone, small branches with a few leaves on them began falling. They are numerous and continue to fall. I see no end in sight, and the tree is starting to look sparse.  Is this a result of the cicadas, or is there some other problem with my trees? Also, are my trees dying ... [full story]

Q: We're hoping to have a foreign exchange student come spend the next school year with us. "Us" means two teenage girls and a 7-year-old. The girls say they are willing to give up their room and move to the attic, which is kind of dismal at the moment. It's also small, two beds will take up all the space. Maybe you have some ideas on how to make it work as a bedroom for ... [full story]

The creator of such enduring sleuths as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie was herself somewhat of a mysterious character. She once disappeared for 10 days in 1926, claiming amnesia. She is a favorite of classic detective fiction collectors. The bestselling mystery writer of all time was born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller ... [full story]
