Comic book superheroine Mary Marvel was one of the few of her gender to break the glass ceiling of her day, and did it before she was out of her teens. This happened in 1942, a propitious moment, at the onset of America's entrance into World War II, when women were being empowered, taking on factory jobs and playing professional sports - becoming wonder women in real life. And Mary Marvel was among the first ... [full story]

Q: Enclosed is a photo of a secretary that I have inherited. It originally belonged to my grandfather. No one in our family has been able to furnish any information as to the age of our secretary. Everyone just says, "He always had it." He died at the age of 80 in 1947 and then it was passed down to my mother. Inside the drop front part are various size cubbyholes. Behind the lower door ... Q: I had an Arizona ash tree planted in my front yard last month. It is approximately 10 feet tall and the trunk is 2.5 inches in diameter at the base. The lower branches are 3 to 4 feet in length and spindly. As such, they droop like a weeping willow. Is this typical for an Arizona ash that was in a 24-inch wood box, or should the lower branches be pruned?  A: The small ... [full story]

Q: Growing up in a small Midwest town, I remember wonderful summers spent on my grandparents' front porch. Not only did the neighbors drop by to "sit a spell," that porch was where important parties happened, like graduations, engagements, new babies. Whatever mattered in life was celebrated on that porch. I'd so love to give my sons (and my New York City-born husband) a taste of what that was like, but the porch is really ... [full story]

There is a general consensus in the vintage fountain pen world that the Big Four brands are Waterman, Parker, Scheaffer and Wahl Eversharp, but there are a number of other brands that, though less well known, were equally elegant - and collectible - writing instruments. Well worth looking out for are pens made by, for example, the Conklin Pen Co., Aiken Lambert, Crocker, later known as Chilton, the Pilot Co., the Moore Pen Co., Paul ... [full story]

Q: I would like to know more about the Arts and Crafts oak cellaret seen in this photo. It belonged to my husband's parents. It was from a furnished beach cottage they bought in the 1950s. Behind the two doors are shelves and one drawer. Inside the drawer is a red and yellow paper label with the words "The Work of L. & J. G. Stickley." Above the doors is a pullout copper shelf. My ... Q: I have been having a problem with my petunias this year. I planted them as I always do on Memorial Day weekend in Miracle-Gro potting soil; however, they are all dying on me. They become limp like they have too much water in them and start to die. They don't turn yellow; they turn brown.  I replanted thinking the problem might have been where I got my first plants. But the new group from ... [full story]

Q: There's a sun porch - I guess you call it - off the living room of our 1929 Colonial-style house. It's all windows on three walls with French doors leading into the living room on both sides of the fourth wall. The room doesn't have heat but our winters are pretty mild. We've been decorating room-by-room since moving in last fall. Now we've come to the porch and need ideas.   RELAX IN STYLE - ... [full story]
