A 53-year old pilot walked away with only cuts and scrapes after he crashed his single-engine plane into a tree when he aborted landing at the Sisters airstrip during the final stages of the maneuver in an attempt to avoid a person he thought was standing too close to the runway, deputies reported. Over 31 grams of methamphetamine were seized during an investigation by drug agents that resulted in the arrest of two Madras men last week, authorities reported. Juan Santellano Reynoso, 40, and Martin Salgado-Benitez, 44, were taken into custody and lodged in the Jefferson County Jail about 3:30 p.m., August 1, Bend Police Lieutenant John Gautney said. Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies gave chase to a suspect vehicle they spotted on Highway 97 that was tied to an earlier shooting of a man in Madras, but lost sight of the pickup in dust when it drove onto a dirt road.  The vehicle was located about three hours later, abandoned, on a logging road. Search and rescue team members from Deschutes County responded to two unrelated calls for help from hikers, one injured and one ill, on Tuesday, authorities reported.
