There's a curious line in the dialogue of "Rendition": "The CIA calls it 'extraordinary rendition.' It started under Clinton." Which will probably go down like pudding for viewers who figure such "balancing" gives the film credibility, deflecting some blame for a brazen policy away from the current administration. And, hey, this is a Hollywood movie with hopes.   'RENDITION' - Meryl Streep and Alan Arkin star in the political drama 'Rendition.' CNS Photo courtesy of Sam ... [full story]

Benicio del Toro is aging into one of the major, used movie faces, up there near Bogart, Gabin, Von Sydow, Mitchum, O'Toole, Nolte and Tommy Lee Jones. A few times in "Things We Lost in the Fire," he could be James Dean at 40.   'THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE' - David Duchovny comes to the aid of friend Benicio Del Toro in the drama 'Things We Lost in the Fire.' "Reservation Road" hits its marks, but regrettably the marks are made of sponge. There is the squishy tension of a problem drama gone soft.   'RESERVATION ROAD' - Jennifer Connelly and Joaquin Phoenix are a family torn apart by an accident in the drama 'Reservation Road.' CNS Photo courtesy of Macall Polay.  RATINGS 4 STARS - Excellent. 3 STARS - Worthy. 2 STARS - Mixed. 1 STAR - Poor. 0 - Forget It (a dog.) Mark Ruffalo plays ... [full story]

NEW RELEASES DAN IN REAL LIFE - The two good things in "Dan in Real Life" are right at the center: Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche. They are winsome and winning, but the script is taffy custard. Carell is Dan, a "real life" advice columnist seeking syndication. A widower, he devotedly fathers three girls,   'DAN IN REAL LIFE' - In 'Dan in Real Life,' Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche find that family life includes real ... [full story]

At one point in the absurdly dense and sprawling "Spider-Man 3" (Sony, 3 stars) even wimpy photo-boy Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as alter-ego, Spidey, exclaims in exasperation: "Where are these guys coming from?"   'SPIDER-MAN 3' - Tobey Maguire fights an array of bad guys in 'Spider-Man 3'. CNS Photo courtesy of Merrick Morton   DVD RATINGS 4 stars: Don't miss: rent it/buy it 3 stars: Worth the risk: rent it 2 stars: On the tipping point: if ... [full story]

"Finding someone you think would be fun to kill is a bit like, well it's a bit like falling in love. You meet a lot of candidates, and you like some of them, and they're nice. But they're not right. And that special one comes along, and your heart beats faster, and you know that's the one."   'MR. BROOKS' - Kevin Costner plays a man who can't control his murderous ego in the thriller 'Mr. ... I'm not going to lie. I'm way too old and worldly to care about a movie like "Transformers" (Paramount/DreamWorks, 3 1/2 stars). I mean, I've been places, experienced stuff, lived in the real world. You know?   'TRANSFORMERS' - Bonecrusher goes on a destructive rampage in the sci-fi thriller 'Transformers.' I think the Steve Carell sequel "Evan Almighty" (Universal, 2 stars) has exhausted the commercial and creative spin-off possibilities of the modestly ambitious Jim Carrey comedy "Bruce Almighty." So, if there is a God - and I'm pretty sure there is - there will not be a sequel starring Wanda Sykes (who plays Congressional office manager Rita Daniels) called "Rita Almighty."   'EVAN ALMIGHTY' - Steve Carell portrays a newly elected lawmaker who gets a message ... NEW RELEASES THE DARJEELING LIMITED - When you hear music from Satyajit Ray's arcane classic "The Music Room" at the start of Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited," you realize that Anderson is one hip guy. Savvy thief, too. "Limited," a comedy of "spiritual" seekers, has about as much to do   'THE DARJEELING LIMITED' - Trying to be pious, often failing, brothers played by Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson strike an Indian shrine pose ... 'Michael Clayton" is from writer Tony Gilroy, who scripted the similarly named "Dolores Claiborne." Gilroy is best known for smartly padding out his action plots for the profitable Jason Bourne series.   'MICHAEL CLAYTON' - George Clooney, seen here with co-star Sydney Pollack, is a troubleshooting attorney who refers to himself as 'the janitor' in the drama 'Michael Clayton.' Was the greatest Englishman a woman? Quite possibly, but with due respect to Cate Blanchett, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" cannot make the case.   'ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE' - Cate Blanchett dons the Elizabethan collar again, her second regal turn, in 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age.' 'The Godfather" looms like a stern, judging father over almost every American crime film and TV cop or mob show since 1972. The young writer and director James Gray is, at least, bluntly frank about his debt.   'WE OWN THE NIGHT' - Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg star as two brothers on a collision course in the crime drama 'We Own the Night,' the latest film in director James Gray's crime-family series, following 'Little Odessa' ...
