"Gracie" seems a formula sports inspiration movie, except it isn't. It scores a goal right through the net of cliche. The core of why is in the how. "Gracie" has the values of a real family. It was a project of actress Elisabeth Shue ("Leaving Las Vegas") and brothers Andrew and John, who produced with her. It is dedicated to brother Will, a 1970s soccer prodigy who died in 1988.   'GRACIE' - Dermot Mulroney and ... [full story]

What an odd comedy (and a sure hit) "Knocked Up" is - an attitude bazooka full of sex, drugs and raw language, yet so high on babies and family values that this must be the first R-rated film for both sleazoid slackers and earnest right-to-lifers.   'KNOCKED UP' - Katherine Heigl and Leslie Mann ponder the meaning of a pregnancy test in the romantic comedy 'Knocked Up.' CNS Photo courtesy of Suzanne Hanover. There are jokes about ... [full story]

While movie studios are focused on rolling out major summer blockbusters - they hope - into theaters, their home entertainment divisions have gone on hiatus for the Memorial Day holiday.   'HANNIBAL RISING' - Gaspard Ulliel stars as a young Hannibal Lecter in the thriller 'Hannibal Rising.' CNS Photo courtesy of Keith Hampshere.  How do we know this? Just look at the movies that are arriving on DVD this week. There aren't any. Well, hardly any. Well, ... [full story]

NEW RELEASES   'PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END' - Johnny Depp is navigating treachery again in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.' CNS Photo courtesy of Peter Mountain.  PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END - Compact the title of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" to its acronym - "PC: AWE" - and the message is clear. It seems PC (piratically correct) to feel some awe. Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is ... [full story]

Compact the title of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" to its acronym - "PC: AWE" - and the message is clear. It seems PC (piratically correct) to feel some awe.   'PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN' - Stellan Skarsgard and Orlando Bloom cross swords in combat in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.' CNS Photo courtesy of Stephen Vaughan. The first "Pirates" (2003) was like a barnacled jamboree of improvisation. The second (last year) sagged ... [full story]

"We soldiers dig. We dig all day. This is the hole that we will fight and die in. Am I digging my own grave?" - from a letter written by soldier Saigo on Iwo Jima, to his wife in Japan.   'LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA' - Yuki Matsuzaki and Kazunari Ninomiya star in 'Letters From Iwo Jima.' CNS Photo courtesy of DreamWorks Pictures. The humble trench solder Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya), an even humbler baker conscripted into the ... [full story]

"Shrek the Third" sounds more like a dynasty than a sequel. And, for sure, the grosses are regal - the first and second films cost together about $135 million and have grossed (U.S. alone) more than $700 million.   'SHREK THE THIRD' - Shrek encounters the magic teacher, Merlin, in 'Shrek the Third.' CNS Photo courtesy of DreamWorks Animation. Shrek, green hero of "Shrek the Third," gets primped and pampered, as well he might, since the series ... [full story]

Parker Posey has seemed a little grim in recent years, so "Fay Grim" is a good fit for her. As pinballing Fay, always off balance but never defeated, Posey's famous hip-girl charm has become womanly and packs more punch.   'FAY GRIM' - Parker Posey and Jeff Goldblum star in the offbeat comedy 'Fay Grim.' CNS Photo courtesy of Richard Sylvarnes.  Hal Hartley's crafty entertainment derives from his 1998 art-cult film "Henry Fool." Henry (Thomas Jay Ryan), ... [full story]

A bar of soap is a repeated element in "Georgia Rule," and rightly so. Suds rise in this capably acted fem-drama laced with slap-in comedy.   'GEORGIA RULE' - Felicity Huffman and Jane Fonda star in the drama 'Georgia Rule.' CNS Photo courtesy of Ron Batzdorff. It's a story of three women, plus male appendages (sometimes rather literally). Jane Fonda is Georgia, lonesome and decent widow in wholesome Hull, Idaho. She's not Mormon like most of the ... [full story]

NEW RELEASES   'SHREK THE THIRD' - Donkey, Shrek, Fiona and Puss in Boots in a scene from 'Shrek the Third.' CNS Photo courtesy of DreamWorks Animation. SHREK THE THIRD - Shrek, green hero of "Shrek the Third," gets primped and pampered, as well he might, since the series has had a golden chain of box-office success. But the third movie has the look of royal inbreeding. The fun bunch is back, including the giant, green, lovable ... [full story]

In a video prologue to his very adult fairy tale "Pan's Labyrinth" (New Line, 4 stars) the visionary writer-director Guillermo del Toro offers some compelling reasons to watch his film. "This movie almost destroyed me," he says with an almost unfathomable calm and wisp of a smile. "It took away 45 pounds of my body (he still looks like a gentler Michael Moore); many sleepless nights; and a lot of love." There you have it, ... [full story]

NEW RELEASES   '28 WEEKS LATER …' - Rose Byrne and Jeremy Renner star in the sci-fi thriller '28 Weeks Later …' CNS Photo courtesy of Fox Atomic 28 WEEKS LATER ... - About 28 hours after viewing "28 Weeks Later ...," I woke up sweating, staring hungrily at my arm through scarlet eyeballs, and babbling, "No more reviews! No more reviews! No more. ..." But that passed. And in less than 28 days, "28 Weeks Later ... [full story]

Zach Braff is fine on TV and did a nice job writing, directing and acting in "Garden State." But his meal ticket is boyish cuteness - he's like a teen girls' chat room overhaul of Jon Lovitz.   'THE EX' - Amanda Peet and Jason Bateman star in the romantic comedy 'The Ex.' CNS Photo courtesy of Demmie Todd / Weinstein Co. Braff smiles and gulps and double-takes cutely in "The Ex" as Tom, an aspiring New ... [full story]
