"Pride" is one of those film titles, like "Victory," "Gold," "Winning" and "Perfect," suited to a movie of very obvious purpose and delivery. Not much thinking required.   'PRIDE' - Terrence Howard plays a determined swim team coach in the sports drama 'Pride.' CNS Photo courtesy of Lions Gate. As with those, so again with "Pride," a sincere and plodding treatment of Philadelphia swimming coach Jim Ellis. Terrence Howard, who came to some fame and justified acclaim ... [full story]

Here is a double law about con artist movies: Watching a clever person con bright people can be very entertaining; watching a sloppy hoaxer con stupid or ignorant people is only a fool's delight.   'COLOR ME KUBRICK' - Jim Davidson and John Malkovich star in the comedy 'Color Me Kubrick.' CNS Photo courtesy of Magnolia Pictures. The first truth will be affirmed by "The Hoax," the coming (April 6) movie with Richard Gere as con wizard ... [full story]

Movie Review of "PREMONITION" If only Sandra Bullock had had a premonition about the artistic merit of this film. If only she'd had a premonition that audiences usually don't like to be lulled into a annoyed stupor. Her character, Linda Hanson, receives presentiments from the future. And so did Bullock, who was given ample warning about "Premonition." Was it via tea leaves? Tarot cards? Hallucinations? Nope—all the warning she needed was right there in the ... [full story]

NEW RELEASES   'PREMONITION' - Sandra Bullock plays a housewife who suffers a terrible premonition in the psychological thriller 'Premonition.' CNS Photo courtesy of Ron Batzdorff. PREMONITION - Alfred Hitchcock has been dead since 1980, but he didn't leave his lessons on how to make taut thrillers in an unmarked grave. Somebody, please, get a few of those lessons to the makers of "Premonition." Not exactly a thriller, never quite a chiller, hardly suspenseful, it is, at best, ... [full story]

Mark Ruffalo is a chameleon on the big screen, subtly disappearing into the wide variety of roles he has played in films over the past 15 years. Most people would not recognize the Wisconsin-born actor and that is the way Ruffalo likes it, figuring his longevity in Hollywood depends on his ability to keep audiences guessing. On the other hand, he would not mind having a runaway box office hit every now and then. Ruffalo's ... [full story]

Alfred Hitchcock has been dead since 1980, but he didn't leave his lessons on how to make taut thrillers in an unmarked grave. Somebody, please, get a few of those lessons to the makers of "Premonition."   'PREMONITION' - Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon star in the psychological thriller 'Premonition.' CNS Photo courtesy of Ron Batzdorff. Not exactly a thriller, never quite a chiller, hardly suspenseful, it is, at best, a Sandra Bullock vehicle made of vanishing ... [full story]

Yo, Adrian's dead. And Rocky Balboa is none too happy about it. Feels cheated. Out of life. Like he tells that useless lump Paulie, he's got a pain inside that needs to get out. So, that's kind of how the Italian Stallion ends up fighting the heavyweight champion of the world in a Las Vegas boxing match at the age of - what? - I'm guessing 100, in the sixth film in that venerable underdog ... "Zodiac," the movie, is a killer. Zodiac, the killer, is an elusive psychopath who terrorized and taunted the Bay Area beginning in the late '60s, mocking police and newspaper reporters who became fixated on nailing him. They never did.   'ZODIAC' - Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal are employees of the San Francisco Chronicle who get tangled up in the hunt for a serial killer in the drama 'Zodiac.' CNS Photo courtesy of Merrick Morton. Director David Fincher, noted ... [full story]

Some movies of carnage open our minds to war, death and history in a valid way, like Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima films. And then there are the bloody piles of raw meat for finger-lickin' oafs, like "Apocalypto" and "300." "300" has even more death than Mel Gibson's Mayan epic, a gain that adds up to a minus. Zack Snyder of "Dawn of the Dead" (the 2004 version) filmed Frank Miller's graphic novel, about the brave 300 ... [full story]

Jim Carrey finally tackles his first starring role in a serious thriller with "The Number 23." The Canadian-born comedian restrains his comic impulses to play a relatively regular guy in this mind-bender with an intriguing concept. I think the debate is fairly well settled: Daniel Craig is probably the finest James Bond to emerge since Sean Connery hung up his license to kill. With time and a few more episodes beyond "Casino Royale" (Sony, 3 1/2 stars) and Craig may well eclipse Connery in the hearts and minds of Bond fans. Craig has two major assets working in his favor. For one, he has a rugged reserve and uneven features that ... [full story]
