Movie Review of "WILD HOGS" It's "City Slickers" on cycles. A foursome of Cincinnati middle-aged males swap the humdrum for the thrum-thrum of their Harleys. The British term for these guys is "BAMBI" (Born Again Middle-Aged Bikers), weekend warriors who go to the large biker gatherings by trucking their bikes, rather than riding them. Sssh—don't tell.   John Travolta, William H. Macy, and Tim Allen star in “Wild Hogs” As with most comedies, it's not just the ... [full story]

Perhaps not since Susan George slathered her body all over Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" (1971) has an actress achieved such sluttiness as Christina Ricci in "Black Snake Moan." The title alone should warn off Ricci's early fans, who loved the moon-faced cutie of "The Addams Family" (1991). That girl is gone. Now, as sexpot Rae, Ricci is slenderly nubile and runs around clothed in sweat, a skimpy half-top and tiny panties.   'BLACK SNAKE MOAN' - ... [full story]

Heading south from the quirks of "Twin Falls Idaho," the Polish brothers (Mark, Michael) have gone to New Mexico, which subs for Texas, and made a sweet, congenial comedy of dreams. "The Astronaut Farmer" contains no murderously jealous astronauts. Billy Bob Thornton, looking more than ever like a Dust Bowl version of Humphrey Bogart, is the dreamer named Farmer who wants to be an astronaut. Charles Farmer was once a hot Air Force pilot, but ... [full story]

It's supposed to get downright spooky after a while. Except it doesn't. Animal-control guy - that is, dogcatcher - Walter Sparrow (Jim Carrey) starts reading a tattered little self-published novel called "The Number 23" that his wife, Agatha (Virginia Madsen), picked up in a used bookstore. 'THE NUMBER 23' - Virginia Madsen and Danny Huston are featured in the drama 'The Number 23.' CNS Photo courtesy of Christine Loss. Eerily, the plot of the book ... [full story]

Movie Review of "BREACH" Robert Hanssen's character is so sated in contradictions that if he were a writer's creation, the writer would be criticized for unbelievable inconsistency. Yet Hanssen is the real deal, living out his days in a federal penitentiary without parole.  In what former FBI and CIA director William Webster called "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history," Hanssen sold state secrets for over 20 years. Yet he was a fanatic about ... [full story]

Movie Review of "BECAUSE I SAID SO" It's time for Diane Keaton to consider roles other than the matriarch of a warm, loving, slightly wacky family. She was a wonder in "Something's Gotta Give," perfectly fine in "The Family Stone," but now, in this third rendition of Mommie Dearest, it's time to call a moratorium on this mother. (Dear Mother of God, I see that in her next two movies she's at it again, starring ... [full story]

Movie Review of "THE GOOD GERMAN" One would think that between the stellar talents of director Steven Soderbergh ("Traffic," "Erin Brockovich," "Sex, Lies and Videotape") screenwriter Paul Attanasio ("Sum of All Fears," "Donnie Brasco," "Quiz Show") and three of the most winning actors on screen today (Clooney, Blanchett and Maguire), "The Good German" would be, at the very least, "good." Even great. But like five-day old sauerbrauten, it is surprisingly unpalatable.  The impossibly overly-complicated, undernourished ... [full story]

Movie Review of "STOMP THE YARD" The film opens with a slow motion tracking on a woman's long black tresses snaking forward and back, inviting us into the movement. Then crash! The audience is slammed into a high energy hip-hop wall of sound while crowds of young, prenaturally gifted street dancers compete against each other. The moves are jaw-dropping—dancers spin on the top of their heads, fly Evel Kneivel-style over three crouching bodies and then, ... [full story]

Movie Review of "ALPHA DOG" "Alpha Dog" takes place in the San Gabriel Valley, the other, lesser known "Valley" that is adjacent to Los Angeles. Aside from upper crust Pasadena and San Marino, this Valley comes in as the redheaded stepsister to the much better known, much wealthier San Fernando Valley. With an idolized picture of crimelord Tony "Scarface" Montana on his wall, Johnny Truelove wants to be #1 as much as the valley he ... [full story]

Movie Review of "NOTES ON A SCANDAL" It's always a great pleasure to see two marvelous actors face off against each other. In "Notes On A Scandal," the filmmakers treat us to a double delight with England's Judi Dench versus Australia's Cate Blanchett, both nominated repeatedly for Oscars, and both having won for Best Supporting Actress (Dench for 1998's "Shakespeare in Love," and Blanchett for 2004's "The Aviator").  Mirroring the novel's device as a journal, ... Movie Review of "DREAMGIRLS" There's a whole lot of dreamy to this "Dreamgirls": Jennifer Hudson and That Voice, so powerful it deserves its own billing.  Eddie Murphy's amazing Jimmy Early. (He sings! He dances!) The costumes (if you don't like one, no problem, just wait three minutes), the sets, the music, the staging. At times, it has all the flash, fun and spectacle we've been expecting. But like a dream, only a few vibrant moments ... [full story]

Movie Review of "THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS" This is a film about a father who runs. He runs from a past, consisting of a fatherless childhood, a failing marriage and poor business choices. He runs toward a future, consisting of the cloudy hope of a successful new career, self-respect and possible "happyness." Above all, he runs with his child, the love of his life. And even when his son isn't physically with him, literally running ... [full story]
