PORTLAND, Ore. — River traffic on the Columbia River at the John Day Dam might reopen as early as Monday, March 3, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today. The upstream navigation lock gate at the facility was extensively damaged late February 28 when barges came into contact with the upstream gate while the lock chamber was filling. Portland Fire & Rescue investigators have determined the cause of a fire that resulted in the death of one person Monday night – a carelessly discarded cigarette. The cigarette smoldered in a bed mattress of the southwest Portland residence until flames erupted and spread to the rest of the house, officials said. A health advisory for contact with marine water at Cannon Beach in Clatsop County was lifted today by the Oregon Department of Human Services, in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. The advisory was issued Tuesday, after water samples at Cannon Beach showed higher-than-normal levels of enterococcus, a type of fecal bacteria, in the marine water.
