TOKYO - Twelve people were injured when an earthquake that registered 5.4 on the Richter scale hit central Japan, Kuna News Agency reported Sunday. The quake struck large areas of central and west Japan, damaging scores of houses and causing the collapse of part of a stone wall from a castle built in the 16th century. JERUSALEM - The Vatican ambassador to the Holy Land decided over the weekend not to boycott the official Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony at Yad Vashem. The Jerusalem Post reported that the Vatican called off the boycott of Sunday's events after Yad Vashem officials urged Vatican Ambassador Monsignor Antonio Franco to do some "soul-searching." MOSCOW - Two leading Russian officials say military action against Iran should be ruled out. Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the State Duma International Affairs Committee, met Friday to discuss Iran with Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak, Novosti reported. ABERDEEN, England - Hope was running out Friday for five crewman missing from an oil rig vessel that capsized in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland's Shetland Isles. Sky News reported that a 15-year-old boy and his father were believed to be among the missing crew. BRUSSELS - The chairman of the U.S. House Financial Services Committee is expressing skepticism about the chance of overturning a controversial online gambling law. Rep. CARACAS, Venezuela - Cuban leader Fidel Castro is almost "completely recovered" from an illness that required surgery last July, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday. Chavez told reporters in Caracas, Venezuela, that a reliable source assured him Castro is nearly ready to resume his full workload, Globovision TV reported. ACAPULCO, Mexico - An earthquake rattled northwest Mexico early Friday, causing panic in the streets of the resort town of Acapulco and downing power lines, TV Azteca reported. The quake registered a 6.0 on the Richter scale, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Tremors reportedly originated on the Pacific Coast. There were no reports of deaths or injuries due to the quake. TEHRAN - Iran plans to auction off the American Embassy in Tehran on behalf of an Iranian businessman arrested in a U.S. customs sting operation 15 years ago. "The property has effectively been seized and is in my name," Hossein Alikhani told The Times of London. MONTREAL - A ship carrying toxic and flammable chemicals ran aground in the St. Lawrence River near Montreal Thursday and was towed to safety. The Montreal Gazette reported that the Sichem Aneline was carrying highly toxic benzene and flammable hydrocarbon to Philadelphia when it ran aground Thursday near the eastern tip of Montreal Island. MBABANE, Swaziland - Six members of a banned political party in Swaziland have been arrested for carrying "seditious" pamphlets during a pro-democracy demonstration. JERUSALEM - Arab Knesset member Azmi Bishara Friday said Israel "would not be able to handle the challenge I've thrown to its Jewry and Zionist stance." PRAGUE, Czech Republic - A U.S. defense agency said the construction of a U.S. radar base on Czech territory south of Prague would cost about $260 million.
