KIEV - Ukraine was in a political standoff Thursday, with the Supreme Council refusing the president's order to disband.
Pro-Western President Viktor Yushchenko has called for the legislature to dissolve and for new elections to be called, RIA Novosti reported.

BELGRADE - A Serbian court Thursday upheld the 13-year-prison sentence for an ethnic-Albanian accused of warcrimes against Gypsies in the Kosovo province in 1999.
The Serbian Supreme Court in Belgrade rejected as unfounded an appeal by Anton Lekai, former member of the Kosovo Liberation Army of ethnic-Albanian separatists, the Serbian news agency Beta reported.

NAZARETH - The decision by Israeli troops to fire at figures along Lebanon's border last week represents a drastic change in Israel Defense Forces' policy, a report said.

ABU DHABI - Kuwait's As-Siyasa newspaper claimed Wednesday the United States is planning a missile attack on Iran later this month.

HONG KONG - Nina Wang, one of the richest women in the world with an estimated fortune of over $4 billion, reportedly died in Hong Kong at age 70.
China's official news agency Xinhua, citing a company statement, said that Wang died of illness Tuesday. It said the company gave no details but earlier reports had said she had cancer.

LONDON - The British government has set aside nearly $1 billion to expand its security camera systems to include loudspeakers to confront offenders.
