Q: Where we live, everyone has traditional houses with antiques, crystal chandeliers and oriental rugs. I'm not brave enough to be really different. Besides, I grew up with and still love traditional rooms. But lately I find myself wanting a new look. Any suggestions? A: You can have your traditional and update it, too, if you're brave enough to experiment with a few new ideas about colors and patterns in wallpapers, fabrics and paint.   ENERGY ... [full story]

Q: My only grandson is now 23 and we do not get along well. We began to differ in most of our opinions several years ago. Recently I learned I have a major health problem, and now it's very important to me to bond with him. I don't want to approach him based on my health issue to solve our differences. In fact, I have not alerted any of my family of my doctor's opinion. ... [full story]

For a show that ran a scant three years, and was predictable, lighthearted, escapist entertainment, "Gilligan's Island" made a disproportionately deep impression on the American psyche, both in its initial run and in reruns. It's surprising how many people remember its catchphrases, can do an imitation of Thurston Howell III, or can belt out "The Ballad of Gilligan's Island." The show debuted on CBS in September 1964 and played its theme song for the last ... [full story]

It is difficult to overestimate the effect a bad boss has in a workplace, but it's just as easy to undervalue the effect of a good boss. A survey by Yahoo! HotJobs reveals that 43 percent of American workers would leave their jobs if they didn't like the supervisor's management style or were not given adequate mentoring in their jobs. The boss obviously has a big impact on employee morale, and not in a good ... [full story]

When in need of career advice, where do most workers seek guidance? Forty-six percent of executives initially turn to spouses or significant others when considering a job change, according to a survey by Accountemps, a staffing service that questioned 150 senior executives. "Mark - You should be ashamed of yourself for taking that little thing away from its mother! Please tell me you aren't driving that on the freeway. Not 'Smart'!," wrote a female colleague in an e-mail the day the Smart Fortwo test car was delivered.   SMART FORTWO - The Smart Fortwo is considered a 'city' car, but it travels comfortably on the Interstate and is stable in evasive maneuvers.
