It's been a year since Jan Takehara learned of her parents' tragic demise. And she's able now to talk about it relatively dispassionately. It took a three-week search of the city to find her parents, Sumio and Betty Takehara, who had disappeared from the San Diego home they shared with their daughter. The octogenarian couple, who were married 60 years, were found last September in their wrecked 1989 Toyota, below a 230-foot embankment in eastern ... [full story]

John P. Walters, director, Office of National Drug Control Policy, was nominated by President Bush in 2001 and was confirmed by the Senate. He previously served as the ONDCP's first chief of staff in 1989-1993 and held posts at the Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Since 2001, federal statistics show significant declines in drug use by young people. Walters was interviewed by members of The San Diego Union-Tribune's editorial board. ... [full story]

With her more frequent shuttle missions to the Middle East, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is signaling the Bush administration's determination to pull out all the stops to achieve a major breakthrough in efforts to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But the odds for success of her planned peace conference this fall in Annapolis, Md., are virtually nil. In her impatient quest for a peacemaking legacy, Rice is ignoring critical realities on the ground that require ... [full story]

Location, location, location - those are the three most important factors in determining the value of real estate, so the old saying goes. Recent studies have pointed up the great variety in real estate market areas across the country. For example, the average price of homes sold in Beverly Hills, Calif., is now about $2.21 million, whereas in Killeen, Texas, the average price is $136,700. Of course, that's an extreme contrast. Beverly Hills is the ... [full story]

Most of us have experienced what psychologists call "cognitive dissonance," the sense of tension that inevitably arises when we're faced with two conflicting choices, or when we behave in a way that might be at odds with what we think is right. You've finished a meal, for example, and your hunger is satisfied; however, you're still tempted when you see the dessert tray rolling down the aisle. For me, at least, I'm going to enjoy ... Learning to ride a bicycle is a childhood rite of passage that leaves many a youngster with fond memories - if not permanent scars on their elbows and knees. Now a study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital concludes that bicycle-related injuries to young riders in the United States could be a more significant public health concern than previously recognized. The combined cost in hospital stays for young ... [full story]

Dear senators and members of Congress: I recently visited NASDAQ on behalf of NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott to help raise money for his "All Stars Helping Kids" program, and while I was there I had the opportunity to say in my luncheon remarks on Wall Street that I've long believed that where capital investment and trade are crossing borders, armies don't. In an increasingly flat world, to draw on Thomas Friedman's very apt ... [full story]

It is Halloween and, once again, gruesome images of death and the dead haunt the scene. Coffins open, Dracula bares his vampire fangs, jangly-boned skeletons, ghosts and zombies rise from the ground.   DEATH TO DUST - Digging deeper into the process of dying. CNS Photo Illustration. "People think death is a scary process," says Kathy Kalbacken. "I don't see dying like that." Death, in the public mind, is often violent and dark, spooky and fearful, hallmarks ... [full story]

Self-confidence, serenity, a sense of fears vanquished and aspirations attained. All those priceless rewards awaited Matt Stradling and Dan Stevens, and all they had to do was walk 55 feet in a straight line.   STRIDING HIGH - Before striding high on a slackline above Yosemite National Park, Matt Stradling and Dan Stevens practice at home. CNS Photo by Howard Lipin. Couple of things about that: The line was actually a 1-inch-wide strip of nylon webbing, strung ... [full story]

Now that the hot days of summer have turned into cool fall weeks, it's time to take a break and make a few easy changes in not only our wardrobes, but our beauty routines, too. Sometimes it only takes a change in lipstick color to make a big difference. After all, the holidays are coming and what better time to glam it up a little.   GOODBYE STRAIGHT, HELLO WAVE - Classic Hollywood waves are back ... [full story]
