One of the many great things about fishing is that presents endless possibilities. Pretty much everyone takes to the water with a single goal in mind: to catch fish. Some people use artificial lures, other use bait; but within these two types of fishing lie a multitude of options for getting more fish in the boat.   Skeet Reese is the 2007 BASS Elite Series Angler of the Year and an 8-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier. Reese lives ... [full story]

Twice in the past week, President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have cranked up the rhetoric about the government of Iran's nuclear ambitions. Last Wednesday, the president said a nuclear-armed Iran raised the specter of "World War III," and on Sunday, the vice president said flatly, "We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon." Given the consensus within western intelligence agencies that Iran is at least five years - probably ... [full story]

The United Auto Workers' deals with General Motors and Chrysler represent a recognition of cold reality. The big automakers are losing money on their North American operations. Unless that changes, the jobs of all union members eventually could be in jeopardy, along with the health insurance and other benefits earned by retirees under previous contracts. Considering those unpleasant truths, the UAW has negotiated a fairly favorable tentative contract for its members, but workers at the ... [full story]

The Free Flow of Information Act that overwhelmingly passed the House last week isn't perfect, but it is likely the best shield law we'll get to protect the rights of journalists to do their jobs free of government interference. Why is a federal shield law needed? Because the watchdog role assigned to the press by the Constitution is being undermined by the escalating practice in federal courts of demanding notes and the revelation of sources. ... [full story]

Turkey - Islamic, a democracy and a NATO member - is likely a lot like the country President Bush hoped would emerge from the Iraq war. But this ally appears poised to intercede militarily in a country that the United States has "liberated." This, if nothing else, is a lesson in the value of thinking things through when invading a region riven with age-old animosities and territorial claims. Certainly, Turkey, provoked by attacks from Kurdish ... [full story]

Unless you're a hard-core political junkie, you probably don't know who Bill Gardner is or that, right now, he has more to say about who will be the next president of the United States than anyone else in America. Gardner is New Hampshire's secretary of state. As such, he has sole authority over setting the date for the New Hampshire primary. The "first-in-the-nation" tradition is as important to Granite Staters as the fact that the ... [full story]

For too long, global warming has matched Mark Twain's description of the weather: Everybody talked about it, but nobody did anything about it. That may be changing. The question is whether it's changing fast enough to keep up with the changes in climate. First, the bad news: An Australian researcher reported this week that carbon dioxide emissions have increased much faster than projected. They were 35 percent higher in 2006 than in 1990. Part of ... This time around, authorities at all levels appear to be acting quickly and effectively to lessen the loss of life and the damage from a national disaster. The fires raging across Southern California are certainly a national tragedy, with nearly 1 million people forced from their homes and nearly 700 square miles burned. But authorities at the local, state and national levels appear so far to be doing their part to help those affected and ... [full story]

Bob Dylan, the Spice Girls and, um, Infinity may sound like a match made in hell (or heaven, if God has a twisted sense of humor). But thanks to such products as the Infinity Edge Push-Up Bra and Sexy Little Things hiphuggers, the grizzled bard of rock and the once-reigning bimbos of pap-pop now have something in common. Dylan and the recently reunited Spice Girls have the rare distinction of being celebrity pop-star endorsers (him ... [full story]

Nellie McKay is a walking bundle of contradictions. A gifted pop music maverick, she's wise and talented beyond her years but also full of anxiety and self-doubt, as only a junk food-loving vegan and animal-rights activist can be.   THE DEFIANT ONE - 'I like sleeping. I don't like working,' claims pop singer/songwriter Nellie McKay, who has released three albums (two of them double-CDs) since 2004. 'I'd just like to pursue the pleasure principle, full-speed.' CNS ... [full story]
