"The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War" by David Halberstam; Hyperion; 736 pages; $35.   PORK CHOP HILLS - David Halberstam's final book, 'The Coldest Winter,' is intelligent, thrilling history. CNS Photo Illustration. The Korean War ended in stalemate, the communist North and the Western-allied South reassuming an uneasy coexistence on the 38th Parallel after years of inconclusive combat. In the beginning, though, the war was marked by swift reversals of fortune. On June 28, 1950, ... [full story]

Abu Ghraib, alleged Gitmo abuses and the bloody mess in Iraq have supposedly tarnished America's standing on human rights and democracy. That's a crabbed view of history even if these critiques were valid, which mostly they are not. Clearly, President Bush doesn't buy the blame-America arguments. He used the global stage of his speech to the United Nations General Assembly to preach the cause of democracy and sharply condemn the world's worst human rights violators. ... [full story]

For all their obvious differences, the White Stripes and Smashing Pumpkins have much more in common than first meets the ear or eye.   SMASHING PUMPKINS - Smashing Pumpkins lead guitarist/singer Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are the only original members of the Smashing Pumpkins on the band's current tour. CNS Photo courtesy of C. Thomas Verfaille. Both bands hail from major Rust Belt cities (Chicago for the Pumpkins, Detroit for the Stripes), and were formed ... [full story]

There's a new place where all the cool new things are coming from and it's nowhere near Nebraska or Canada or London or even Mexico. If you want to find the freshest crop of talent, look way, way, far away to New Zealand. That's where the sweet and quirky indie group The Brunettes comes from.   THE BRUNETTES - The Brunettes are the latest export to come from New Zealand. CNS Photo courtesy of Milana Radojcic. OK, ... Q: During the last several years our dog has had several bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. We have not worried too much about this since she is allowed to run free outside and we know that she often eats garbage and other stuff left along our road. We have always assumed that this is what dogs do. However, more recently we have noticed that our dog's stools are gray and have a very bad odor. ... [full story]

Those who seek to understand what's behind the chatter about President George W. Bush's Security and Prosperity Partnership as a possible prelude to a North American Union, similar to the European Union, should read the 35-page White Paper published recently by the Hudson Institute called "Negotiating North America: The Security and Prosperity Partnership." The Washington, D.C., think tank is blunt and detailed in describing where the Security and Prosperity Partnership is heading. Here's how Hudson ... [full story]

The bad news is that Shakespeare has disappeared from required courses in English departments at more than three-fourths of the top 25 U.S. universities, but the good news is that only 1.6 percent of America's 19 million undergraduates major in English, according to Department of Education figures. When I visit college campuses, students for years have been telling me that the English departments are the most radicalized of all departments, more so than sociology, psychology, ... [full story]

A daughter, who preferred to remain anonymous, left a voice mail explaining her plight and asking if I could write about the subject. A parent herself, she has been caring for her dad in her home for seven years. Now, he's 91 and her responsibilities have become overwhelming. She's had to move him to a retirement home.
