Husband-and-wife business partnerships are growing in popularity, possibly due to the struggle to balance the duties of work and family time. Family businesses make up 80 percent to 90 percent of U.S. business enterprises, and married couples lead 1.2 million U.S. companies, according to statistics from the Family Business Review and the National Federation of Independent Business. Dave and Linda Skromme of San Mateo, Calif., decided to take the plunge 18 years ago. Dave chose ... [full story]

The glow's the same in person as on stage: warm, feminine, direct - no frills or frippery. At the Old Globe in San Diego, where she's performing in her first one-woman show, "Oscar and the Pink Lady," Rosemary Harris, who's just turned 77, said she took the plunge because "It's a wonderful role and there's something about the message - although I don't like that word. There's a philosophy that this book and the play ... [full story]

The gentle giant, Harvey Fierstein, whose voice resembles a bass kazoo, was kidding with that mock of the underground rehearsal hall where he, the 10-member cast and creative team of "A Catered Affair" assembled to meet the local media and the Old Globe staff in San Diego.   THE HARVEY 'AFFAIR' - Harvey Fierstein spent much of his early career in downtown New York basements -- most notably the off-off-Broadway La Mama in a converted frankfurter ... Q: This is a framed, reverse painting that belonged to my grandmother around 1914. It is one of three that I inherited. The other two are scenes of the Titanic and a castle. The one in this photo measures approximately 30 by 18 inches. Other than some wear on the frame it is in good condition. I could not find an artist's signature.   REVERSE PAINTING - This reverse painting on glass was probably done in ... [full story]

Q: During a recent trip to England, I purchased the porcelain candlesticks seen in this photo at an antiques shop near Oxford. I was told the candlesticks were made by Royal Crown Derby and paid about $100 for the pair. They are decorated with an Asian Imari pattern that is red, cobalt blue, green and gold against a white background. They do not have the usual crown mark on the bottom, just the number "7445" ... Twenty-one of 22 teams. Count 'em. Now count 'em out. Indeed, of the last 22 clubs to win 100 or more games, only the 1998 New York Yankees prevailed as World Series champions. But teams don't win 100 games anymore. With their 90-72 record, the Arizona Diamondbacks have fewer wins than any league leader since the season was expanded to 162 games in 1961. While major league baseball has achieved its desired parity, entering the ... [full story]

Many qualities make up a great actor or actress, not the least of which is the ability to immerse oneself in a character, to become that character. When it comes to total immersion, right down to the requisite manner of speech and the dead-on accent, Meryl Streep is the queen - whether she's portraying a Danish baroness in "Out of Africa," a Polish survivor of a Nazi concentration camp in "Sophie's Choice" or an Irish ...
