I think we all know by now that the participation of movie blogigencia on the Internet did not turn "Snakes on a Plane" (New Line, 2 1/2 stars) into the greatest horror movie of all time, nor the campiest. Just the same, it's a pretty entertaining thrill ride for a rainy winter night. (OK, a snowy night if you've got it.) Actually, all that online participation in the creation of this movie proved to be ... [full story]

At first blink, (plus44) seems to be jinxed. At second blink, well, ditto. On Sept. 9, drummer Travis Barker broke his right arm while filming a video for "When Your Heart Stops Beating," the infectious title track from (plus44)'s debut album. His injury, which was exacerbated by a subsequent European tour that took place before his broken limb was diagnosed, led to the postponement of the four-man band's debut U.S. tour. It was scheduled to ... [full story]

Fractals are like metaphysical Legos, building blocks that connect the worlds of number and shape. But unlike the plastic toy bricks, you can't see fractals, which are essentially algorithms or mathematical rules. Instead, you see the patterns they produce, which are fundamentally distinctive, to say the least. All fractal patterns share a few common traits.   FRACTAL ART - “Warm Glow” is the product of a Mandelbrot set, perhaps the most famous fractal. Coloration is based upon how ... [full story]

Let's just say that Dierks Bentley has had a good past few months. His fourth CD, "Long Trip Alone," was released and debuted in the top spot on Billboard's country albums chart. Its first single, "Every Mile a Memory," is a major country hit. Bentley performed the song on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and "Today," and did the same at the 2006 Country Music Awards, where he was a nominee for male vocalist of ... [full story]

Even though the holidays have just passed, I'd like to share an inspirational tale that I've been sitting on for several months. This is a story about some kindhearted souls, who seized upon a simple plan to leverage their charitable donations far beyond what they could have done by writing their own checks. The plan, which you could now argue has been elevated to more of a phenomenon, began during the Sunday services a few ... [full story]

When you have to decide if you're going to wear skinny jeans or if you're going to support the fight against AIDS in Africa, why not do both? It's a great way for fashion companies to put their money where there customers are - in their clothes, shoes and Ipods. So, for one of the best trends of the year, I'm voting for the "Red" campaign; visit www.joinred.com for more information.   GIVING SOMETHING BACK - ... [full story]

Pearls are perfect any time, but they seem especially appropriate for weddings. Known by some as the “Queen of Gems,” the classic elegance of pearls transcends centuries and style fads. Nothing looks more beautiful with a bridal gown than a single strand of flawless pearls. But pearls are not only for the bride -– they’re the perfect accessory for the bridesmaids as well. Today, you can find pearls in shades ranging from the traditional white ... [full story]

THE CHEF On Christmas 2004, Cat Cora was on top of the world. The attractive young chef had risen from humble roots in Jackson, Miss., to the rank of superstar chef. She was, and still is, the only female chef in the history of the "Iron Chef" television show. She had written her first cookbook, "Cat Cora's Kitchen" (Chronicle, $23) and was entertaining the idea of her own cooking show.   CAT CORA - Cat Cora, ... [full story]

More Oregonians are reaching for the top shelf when buying Canadian whiskey, according to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
