Trails leading from Upper Three Creek Sno-Park offer scenic views of Cascades I pause to catch my breath and take in the spectacular scenery around me. Ahead looms the massive snow-covered South Sister. To my right, through lodgepole pines, I glimpse Middle and North Sister, equally massive and clad in white. Not a breeze stirs the air; not a cloud appears in the blue winter sky. Occasional chirping of chickadees and nuthatches in the forest ... [full story]

A Bend teenager was arrested Thursday afternoon when drug enforcement detectives raided a southwest Bend home and found a sophisticated growing operation with 41 marijuana plants inside a room built into the garage, said authorities. Acting on a tip received in November that Chase Garrett Cushman, 18, was growing large amounts of marijuana, Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team (CODE) members gathered evidence to warrant a search of his residence, said Lt. Jim Porter.    CODE detectives ... [full story]

Fifty years behind the pulpit and 30 years in the political spotlight have not slowed the Reverend Jerry Falwell After 50 years behind the pulpit at the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, and nearly 30 years in the political spotlight, the Rev. Jerry Falwell has a lot to be proud of. While he hasn't achieved the iconic status of the Rev. Billy Graham, and his books have not sold the millions of copies ... [full story]

One of this nation's premier journalists (also a friend of long standing) wrote a column last week that can only be labeled as "Bush bashing" writ large. E.J. Dionne Jr. writing in the Washington Post and Investor's Business Daily, wrote the following: "winning the war in Iraq was never the Bush administration's highest priority, saving its tax cuts was more important." Ugh! E.J., E.J., what's gotten into you, don't you read my columns, haven't you ... [full story]

"Auntie Pam, can only boys be president?" The question hung in the air, and then in my head, for days afterward. "Can only boys be president?" My great-niece repeated herself. I fumbled with the rearview mirror, messed with the radio knobs, stalling for time while an 8-year-old waited for a clear answer to a question she shouldn't have to ask. My gut told me a simple response "Of course not" was not enough to erase ... [full story]

It was a bad week for advocates of amnesty and a guest-worker program. On Dec. 12, the Bush administration finally cracked down, 20 years late, on a few thousand of the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who are illegally employed in the United States. This crackdown on employers was promised by the Reagan amnesty of 1986 and now, 20 years later, the government is getting around to enforcing the law. The feds arrested thousands ... [full story]

"How Language Works: How Babies Babble, Words Change Meaning, and Languages Live or Die" by David Crystal; Overlook; 500 pages; $32.50. In a scene in Italo Svevo's antic novel "Confessions of Zeno" (1923) the hopelessly hypochondriacal narrator hears a friend describe the musculature of the leg. He thereupon begins to obsess on the muscles of his own legs, causing him to limp - and he limps for the rest of his life. I sometimes wonder ... [full story]
