In The 2007 Callaway Junior World Golf Championships, South African Dylan Frittelli won the Boys 15-17 Division with an impressive performance on the demanding South Course at Torrey Pines. He shot 70-70-69-74 to blow away the field and win by five shots over the next-best golfer, Danny Lee. Ryo Ishikawa, a 15-year-old from Japan, was in the field that week, but hardly was a factor, other than creating a media frenzy. The so-called "Bashful Prince" ... [full story]

TORONTO - The father of a teenager whose accused killers were let go despite a videotape of the shooting said he's taking his wife and remaining children back to Somalia. "Canada is nothing. ... The Canadian government is nothing," Ahmed Abdikarim Mohammed told the Toronto Sun in front of his modest bungalow. "I go," said Mohammed, a 58-year-old Toronto cab driver. "My plan is this week to go, all together." Mohammed's 18-year-old son Abdikarim Ahmed ... [full story]

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles police detectives say they hope a 1987 tape recording may lead to a serial killer who has killed at least 11 women over two decades. The tape is of a call made from a pay phone, the Los Angeles Times reports. A man, who refused to give his name, said he had seen a body dumped from the back of a van. He gave the license plate number, which proved ... [full story]

The young, muscular man had stopped to check out the 2010 Mustang GT test car, painted Sunset Gold and optioned with the panorama glass roof. It was still about three months before the 2010 would be on sale and few had been seen on streets, but much has been written about it in magazines.   The 2010 Ford Mustang will hit the market this spring sporting a significant "freshening" of exterior design and interior improvements. WASHINGTON - The $26.5 billion U.S. Justice Department budget for 2010 would fund national security and crime-fighting efforts, budget figures show. The budget, part of the proposal President Barack Obama presented Thursday, provides $8 billion for the FBI, including $425 million in enhancements, and $88 million for the national security division. The funding "supports the detection and disruption of terrorists, counterintelligence, cyber security, and other threats against our national security," the document said. The budget ... [full story]

In an example of necessity colliding with common sense, the Pentagon is turning to immigrants to help offset recruitment shortfalls. And not just any immigrants either. The effort is aimed at high-skilled immigrants who came to this country legally on temporary visas and who have lived here for at least two years. Recruits would have the chance to become U.S. citizens in as little as six months following their military service. Illegal immigrants are not ... [full story]

Q: I have been thinking about putting in a rain garden. Do you have any advice?   A: A rain garden is similar to other perennial flowerbeds that you might build — it just holds water longer. Rather than building a raised flowerbed by adding organic matter to get better drainage, a rain garden is a flowerbed built slightly lower so that water accumulates. Rain gardens provide several benefits to your landscape. They trap water that ... [full story]

To shore up a shaky structure, start with the foundation. That's one of the tenets of President Barack Obama's ambitious housing rescue plan, which aims to help 9 million homeowners. If it works, it could help many more people than that. The recession was triggered by the collapse of the housing market, and the economy likely won't revive until that market stabilizes. Obama's plan would provide $75 billion in direct payments as incentives to lenders ... [full story]

Like many of our friends, we took care that our children were not in the room where we discussed family finances, just as our parents and grandparents had before us. Money was a taboo subject. Now, though, given the financial circumstances today, we need to get rid of that outmoded idea and include children in discussions about finances. Children of all ages know when their family faces altered financial circumstances. They notice when they are ... [full story]

It has been 10 years since I was assigned to help count a tiny bit of America for the Census Bureau. It was an intriguing and, I must confess, bizarre experience. And now it is time for the Census again — that massive federal undertaking that takes place every 10 years. It is an effort to count everyone in the country. I will be sitting on the sidelines this time, but it is a job ... [full story]
